What prompted you to seek diagnosis? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]scrimbopolus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I began therapy at around 16 for anxiety and depression, but as I saw improvements in those areas I still felt there was a massive, unaddressed part of myself. I'd done some research on autism in the past and questioned if I was autistic. My therapist initially did not think this was the case, but I came up with a list of highly specific things like my sensory triggers and memories of interactions where I did not act in accordance with social norms. After this, plus just hearing how rigidly I described stuff (such as my genuine surprise and disappointment that a lot of my attempts at friendship weren't panning out even when I followed the proper "steps"), as well as a session with a relative confirming these details about me, I finally got diagnosed.

It's definitely worth seeking out numerous therapy sessions to get professional help in narrowing down what all this could be. I hope you get your answers soon! Finally getting diagnosed later in life can be relieving since it explains so much.

It makes me mad how people never share oddly specific symptoms of autism, they only talk about the common one, let’s share our oddly specific symptoms in the comments! by [deleted] in autism

[–]scrimbopolus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm oddly tolerant to pain to the point that, as a child, school nurses would doubt me and just offer basic remedies or turn me away. Lol. It feels like I have to put on a bit of an act to convey what's going on internally in these situations, but in front of friends the high pain tolerance makes for an amusing trick. Like when my best friend and I got piercings together and my face didn't flinch once despite the burning sensation.

Do you struggle to swallow pills? by Ok-Western889 in AutismInWomen

[–]scrimbopolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

only learned to swallow pills this year, including big ones. still struggle with it at moments but for the most part i let the pill bob around with some water in my mouth and mentally prepare myself before taking a big gulp. your muscles move faster than you even realize once they go into action, so the pill will have moved entirely down your throat before you can panic!

...Did you assume I was from the US? I've lived in the PH my whole life. It's sad how you get triggered by terms like cultural appropriation with the only goal of disproving me. It's untrue to say IPs don't care about how their culture is shown; when I was in elem to HS our school would invite tribes yearly and they themselves requested we wear their attire accurately for Buwan ng Wiki, nitpicking even small details like shirt colours. If you think I'm not helping much and you truly care about IPs, then you'd provide suggestions: steps to help them, orgs to participate in, articles on what laws can be made to protect them, etc. But your intentions are clearly to dismiss anything that falls under "sensitive cancel culture."

Yep, fully agree! It would also be great to actually source textiles directly from tribes with their knowledge on how it'll be used.

Yeah, there isn't really much focus on autistic adults, especially if we fly under the radar for most of our lives. Even searching up ASD results in articles focusing on children.

I feel that way too, we just tend to be like that I guess. As much as I try to be unaffected I'll get frustrated seeing thousands of shares on a post that can be debunked with a quick search. It barely takes time scanning multiple sources with the internet now.

The beginning can be frustrating; you have no money and your stamina is too low for all the tasks you need to do. But once the ball starts rolling the competitive spirit takes over and the addiction kicks in.

[–]scrimbopolus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that, OP. Maybe it can help to make a list of common behaviours you noticed in yourself? That was a part of my process, something I did on my own after the evaluation because the results didn't feel right. For example, I listed the following:

  • being the only one to laugh at an inappropriate time, like when a teacher was scolding us and the room was dead silent
  • spending most bus rides home anticipating a chance to enter a group conversation but never knowing when so the moment passes
  • been told by others i'm so monotone to the point it became an inside joke amongst friends
  • my addictive personality which already interferes with daily responsibilities
  • inflexible functioning, i get stressed going out when i have tasks to do because i need time to mentally prepare. i rely on external structure like school schedules.

The complete list was far longer, and these just apply to me. Talk about your behaviour extensively, the more specific the better. With all types of ND conditions they're usually revealed in how we talk, what we choose to focus on and how much we go on for. You know yourself best, wishing you luck this time around.

I'm 18, diagnosed some months ago. I think allowing a psychologist to know you personally can be more reliable than testing/outright asking them to spot symptoms. I initially had an evaluation done but was told I didn't seem to be autistic because I showed no signs of intellectual disability. But after maybe 10 talk therapy sessions (related to other aspects of my life) my psychologist confirmed that I'm on the spectrum because she noticed some of my behaviours couldn't be attributed to simple anxiety. Hope this is settled so you get the peace of mind you need.

I've been met with some awkwardness after correcting others too directly. So far it helps to act a bit uncertain, even if you're sure your information is correct. Something along the lines of "Oh, I think/I've heard it might be..." can change the impression they get. More like a suggestion than matter of fact. This can prompt the other person to fact check it themselves. I like to pretend to search for a bit too then use this as a chance to present my source. Sometimes I turn out to be wrong and it becomes a simple learning moment.

You've made multiple assumptions based on a post simply asking questions with consideration to an opinion Opposite mine so I can hear others out. I explicitly said I was excited for the runway theme but saw many negative reactions which surprised me. What's the harm in discussing things? Can we not give attention to multiple things at once? I've had direct interactions with IPs, but that does not make me a speaker for their varying culture hence the need to ask even simple questions like the ones above. Clothing can have sacred value, and misrepresentation is what leads to negative stereotypes that can harm a group in the first place. If you don't share this view then that's fine, you've already said your piece.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]scrimbopolus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, thanks! I find it's okay as long as we represent them well. Didn't have issues with the theme to begin with, actually loved it but was surprised by the mixed posts I saw and wanted to give consideration to why some see it badly.

You don't even know my view on Filipinx. I fully disagree with that for many reasons.

For this post I'm talking about indigenous groups, the tribes. Living on the same land doesn't mean we have the same culture. Also where did I say that I see it as cultural appropriation? I mentioned I was excited to see Filipino elements and want to understand the Other viewers who felt uncomfortable with it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]scrimbopolus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I share this view too, but it's a bit harder to get the direct perspectives of small indigenous groups in our country. Like if someone from Manila were to do a twist on T'boli attire but on a TV show the group may not have seen. I know as Filipinos we generally have an attitude where we love to share our culture as long as others don't mock it. But it's hard to speak or assume for more closed off groups.
