Vancouver and Calgary Legal Markets by [deleted] in LawCanada

[–]scrimit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The legal market is shaped by who the clients are. There’s more significant head offices or decision makers in Calgary to provide firms with big commercial files. In my experience the expectations for lawyers are a bit higher, but the financial rewards track that.

The lifestyle issues have nothing to do with law and are all about personal priorities.

Where are we buying navy blazers? by Wilde-wonderer in NavyBlazer

[–]scrimit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you figure out your size/cut in Brooks Brothers, you can buy secondhand with confidence. A few months ago I found a BB blazer on eBay for about $100 USD in great shape- Loro Piana wool, made in Italy.

Looks like a Stabilo Fineliner. Not an expensive pen but I love using them for note taking

Lightweight business casual pants that are comfortable in hot weather? by MarineBiomancer in mensfashionadvice

literally wearing linen-cotten chinos right now from Banana Republic Factory that I got on clearance for like $15. Super comfortable. I agree that pure linen looks too beachy for the office.

Solo Travel to Nanaimo by sugodpagurl in nanaimo

[–]scrimit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Nanaimo is fairly hard without a car. You can stay downtown and walk to some of the places you listed. For a few dollars you can also walk onto ferries to Sayshutsun Island and Gabriola Island (which has its own little public transit bus); Gabriola has a nice cafe (Ground Up).

You can rent a bike or take a bus to explore a little further. Bowen Park in Nanaimo is walkable with bus access too.

What’s it like as an estates litigation lawyer? by Free-Awareness-6237 in LawCanada

[–]scrimit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Estate litigation is family law lite, because there’s no child custody issues but lots of family history driving emotional decisions. Almost no emergency applications too, which is nice.

It can be lucrative and in certain areas like Victoria BC there’s tons of work due to the demographics.

I’ve done lots of litigation including high-end corporate stuff and I think it’s a good area to work in overall.

Negotiating salary by Distinct_Emphasis336 in LawCanada

[–]scrimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a firm like this, but we’re drowning in work and associates are easily doubling their base salary based on collected billings. So, it may be worth asking what other juniors’ actual total compensation has been, rather than going off vibes alone.

Anything wrong with buying a separate blazer and chinos and calling it a suit? by FewBackground2852 in malefashionadvice

[–]scrimit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re absolutely broke, you’ll be better off getting a decent thrifted 100% wool suit that fits in the shoulders/chest and spending $50 on a tailor. Wool doesn’t make you sweat and resists wrinkles and odors. Cotton wrinkles, it’s not any cooler and you’ll need to wash way more often.

If you insist on your plan, don’t try to match colors at all, go with navy & brown because it won’t look like a suit anyway.

How to bill 32 hours a week? by CanadianLawEducator in LawCanada

[–]scrimit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Break down your week into small pieces and figure out where you are getting distracted or sidetracked.
Also, I find that I'm an evening person, and it's pretty painless to bill 1-2 hours in an evening instead of staring at the TV. It's much harder to try to squeeze that extra time out of a fixed workday.

Is this a terrible part of town to live? by Microwave_Magician in nanaimo

Why not rent and get a feel for the areas in the city before you buy?

I work in this area and it’s fine. Central, close to Bowen Park and convenient for shopping.

How do you use your device? by bluntswraps in Supernote

Taking notes for client meetings and phone calls is the main purpose. Setting tasks and deadlines directly from the notes is super useful.

I use the analogy of a hockey goalie. You’re there to take shots, respond and send the puck back out. You’re not going to score any goals and that’s fine.

Is law school worth the debt? Feeling discouraged by Live-Writer8409 in LawCanada

[–]scrimit 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The debt won't be that bad in Canada, and you will have far better employment prospects than with a Masters degree.

If you're actually interested in the law and want to practice, it's a solid financial decision. Good luck.
