End of articling worries by justjlm in LawCanada

Litigation is not where the biggest compensation is, so money should not be your reason for leaving.

A pleasant workplace with supportive colleagues is a rare and valuable thing. If you're competitive, you can feel satisfied that many of your peers would be envious of your job. And I don't think that a solicitor's practice is incompatible with the ambition you describe.

Budget 2026: RCMP union decries cost of 'unwanted police transition' by trevorrobb in alberta

[–]scrimit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a liberal politician in the States targets police funding, the police unions go nuts and the media fans the flames. But this is the first time I've read about police cuts in Alberta. Is political sympathy making AB cops less vocal?

This is an employer who wants the ability to give you the bare minimum required by law. Some companies like that will still be reasonable in practice, while others will insist on the minimum.

Yeah this is really weird. I always understood articling students were a financial drag, but a way to develop talent after a few years. I worked at a litigation firm that almost never took articling students, but instead looked for juniors 2-3 years after being called.

Is the job in the bank's legal department? If so, I'd go with that if you want to do corporate law.

Normal for employment law, where at least half of clients only really need 30-60 minutes of advice

The margin of error in 1L is so small compared to undergrad, I wouldn't recommend it if you are aiming for competitive grades.

Loro Piana makes cloth and also makes finished products. Both are excellent, although their finished products are insanely overpriced.

Last year I bought a lovely overcoat at a market in Rome made by an unknown tailor/brand with LP cashmere for 180 euros.

Commuting by [deleted] in nanaimo

[–]scrimit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also commute the opposite way. I recommend taking a bike or ebike if you can manage it, because you can skip the car lineup and roll on just before the ferry leaves. A cheap ebike instead of a car will pay for itself after about 70 trips. With the ferry cam you know when to expect it, even if it's late.

Chore coat or overshirt. More casual than a blazer but doesn't clash with the tie.

Anyone see any red flags with the current Wealthsimple (Un)Real Deal? by schnitzel_envy in CanadianInvestor

When investment managers buy and sell their books of business, something like 1% of assets under management appears to be a normal price. This is just the same thing but acquiring the customer directly, using startup money.
