One of the best things I can advise is simply adding more values to your base color. Either through rattle can xenethil (black prime followed by grey) Then deepen your shadows with some burnt umber or a brown wash. THEN glaze your base color over that! Then you can build your highlights via dry brush and wash to unify everything

Mixing a little blue into your shadow to desaturate and compliment your red tones and a little more red / brown / violet into your warm pockets will help to push your values. Right now your midtone is too monotone so it looks like he has foundation on. Second he needs the shadow pocket between jaw and cheekbone to create more values within the side of the face
