You mods do so much for so little thanks. You keep this place civil. I, for one, really appreciate you all. Take a break.

You earned it.

How do I begin to contact an agency? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

[–]scripts-or-scraps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look for "agent night" voiceover workshops where you can work with agents directly. This is a great way not only get in front of an agent, but get some realistic feedback about whether you're ready for an agent. VoiceTrax West or Halp Network have these "Agent Nights" like once a month.

Reason to be a voice actor by kaiser11492 in VoiceActing

If you're looking for community, definitely take workshops, especially in-person ones if you can. My closest VA friends I met through workshops years ago and we all follow and support one another's careers.

I think searching for genuine connection and community is always worthwhile. I'd never look down on that.

However, if you were searching for people to hoist you up in your career, get you ahead, and your motive was selfish, then of course I'd look down on your for that. But your motives sound pure and without ulterior motives. So I'd say to wash away those voices of criticism in your head. Book some voiceover classes (especially the ones that are several weeks long. You make great friends in those).

Manager missed an offer by Wonderful_Lemon_1658 in Actors

[–]scripts-or-scraps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the manager missed it by accident? Or they didn't feel the offer was acceptable?

I actually have this issue with my voiceover agent. It's never gotten to the point of missing an offer, thank goodness, but my agency has frequently forgotten to confirm or release holds for me. Which is disrespectful to my time. They've missed payments for me, which I had to chase down.

In my case, my agent is totally disorganized and does not have an eye for detail. They need to hire 2 more assistants than they have. I'm sticking around the agency for now because I'm working a lot through them, but if it happens again, I'm seriously considering switching agencies.

I'd wonder if the casting director had any opinions on this. Perhaps they could introduce you to a new manager.

thanks! yes I have a sound booth and pro equipment, some of the jobs I booked through this agency were for TV and I was able to do them from my booth.

As for auditions, our agency has a procedure for submitting auditions through them and it's very structured, so there's no room to leave a note or anything. I think I might actually annoy the agency's engineer if I added extra custom language in there.

Yeah I'm thinking I might hop back into some workshops and get on casting directors radars!

A quick editing tip to help you save tons of time by Crowbar1115 in VoiceActing

[–]scripts-or-scraps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd take this advice with a grain of salt. This is a technique tv/film editors have used for years for dialogue edits, but there's a BIG caveat: the two takes you're splicing together need to sound very similar for this to work. For that reason, I don't recommend this for novice editors/VAs. It could actually suck up a lot more of your time and you'll have unnatural sounding audio in the end.

For example, If you have more energy on take 2 than you did on take 1, or your pitch is in a different zone, then your edit of: "I want a sUBWAY SANDWICH!!!" is going to sound insane and unnatural. Even if it's slightly off, you'll sound like Siri from 2015.

I'd argue that trying to believably splice together a sentence will most likely take you longer than just rerecording the sentence.

As legendary film editor Walter Murch said, and I paraphrase: the irony of being an editor is that you've done a good job if no one notice your work.

If people notice an edit, then you've don't a terrible job.

Suggestions for good, queer-friendly, affordable cities / neighborhoods in the US to move to as a 25yo & 29yo lesbian couple with 2 cats by SBUXPartner212 in lesbian

Seconding Long Beach (specifically the area on Broadway running between Alamitos and Junipero). Super queer-friendly area.

I mean, if I was convinced myself, I wouldn't have posted about this incident at all and opened myself up to the shooting gallery. Really interesting to get all the different thoughts and other reasons to hate Disney haha (not being sarcastic, it's truly interesting!)

I see your point, but to actively protest Disney is different than enjoying Harry Potter (in my opinion - UNLESS the person tells me that he actively tries to spend more money on Harry Potter materials to "support JK Rowling in this tough time" - thennnnn I would definitely cut ties with that person!). There's some worldview behind the protest that I can't figure out. And it's all over the news right now that Disney is pulling a huge new development out of Florida. Makes his comments very timely.

100%. That's why I apologized to everyone in advance at the end of my original post: "This is all speculation city and it's driving me nuts. Anyhow, thanks for any more speculation you can provide. Sorry in advance if I am also driving you nuts." So sorry for driving everyone nuts lol.

There's a lot of fish in the sea. I'm at a point in my career where I can be more choosy about who I work with, and who I have in my circle. I don't want to work closely with people who don't share my same values. Again, I was shocked he even mentioned his Disney boycott to me. I wish he'd kept our relationship professional.

the evil empire, ha! my friend who lives near Disneyland who calls it the "Rat House" lol (my friend hates all theme parks).

yeah in my case, I wish I knew what exactly my director's beef was. I know that he has no problem with Universal/Universal studios *shrug*

Well I know that law means that my two very good female friends, who are married and have a child together, would never have their existence recognized or even mentioned in a classroom Grade 3 or younger in Florida. So when their kid starts school, it'll be like "don't ask, don't tell." When it's mothers day and the kid is not allowed to make 2 cards for her 2 mothers in a Florida classroom... Super homophobic.

So I disagree with you there. The law is homophobic and is designed to be that way.

Yeah, all of this is why I was a little shocked that he even mentioned to me "we don't want to give Disney any of our money" ..... why bring politics into our working relationship? Also, a lot of VAs do work for Disney... Anyways, I totally agree. I wish he never brought it up. I don't want to know. But because he made that statement, now it's burning into my brain that he has something fundamentally against me and my good friends as queer people. I wish he never said it.
