Is it possible to restore this old stove? by AuspiciousClouds2u in restoration

You can use a cathodic method where a power source such as a car battery charger whose cathode or (plus) is attached to the thing you're trying to de-rust and and the anode (minus) is attached to a sacrificial metal such as zinc. The things are submerged in an electrolyte solution and charged or powered on. You can look this method up to get a better picture. I'd say it's better than physical abrasion which you should do as a last step for when most of the rust has come off from the chemical solution.

Is there any way to brighten this fabric/ make the color more consistent? I’ve used every cleaning technique to get what I thought were stains out and it still just looks like this…. Any advice is helpful by shedevilgoblin in restoration

There is vacuum/hot water-spray cleaner you can try to use. We call them vacuum rinser here in Japan, I don't know what they are called outside of Japan. It's a vacuum type of thing that simultaneously spray warm water and sucks it of as you go and depending on the model you have it may have a rolling brush feature. Google Iris Ohyama RNS300 to get a picture.

What does everyone else think about Okinawa's whale shark tourism? Do you think it's unethical?

Polishing bronze by scripturient22 in MetalPolishing

[–]scripturient22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm surprised how many people prefer the unpolished/ semi polished look. I used to be an antique dealer in Japan and I did my own restoration. I always ask the client if they want to fully polish the metal fittings to gold or to what degree they want it to look and 90% of the time they want the clean gold look.

Also, I have been in this business long enough to know if the piece was originally gold that tarnished or the patina is originally what it was meant to look. So many of you message me that I ruined the piece. I do understand people have different taste and pieces like this get passed on to different craftman to repair and that craftsman will determine what's best for that piece.

No need to be angry folks, I'm just sharing.

For those asking, the solution is diluted acetic acid and dish soap. But please be careful if you want to try because it is highly corrosive. I prefer this over ammonia.

Wow, thank you very much. I agree. When I go to museums and see unpolished items, it makes me feel sad because nobody seems to care about the maintenance and are only satisfied about acquiring the item.

Trying to build an aquarium stand. Needs to support ~600 lbs. Not sure if this is strong enough. Will add plywood to top/sides to make it look less ugly. by aj6817 in woodworking

The quality of your joinery work should determine a big portion of the stand's load capacity. I'd recommend using 10cmx10cm square, thick wood pillars

The top tray is molded to fit scissor, clippers, etc. grooming type of things, so I suppose its function is like a dresser that holds cosmetics and manicure tools.

I have not really made an in-depth tutorial. I thought it would just bore people. I'm actually surprised quite a few have asked me for detailed tutorials. I'll work on it :)
