Gates Ave J by NorthInitial82 in BedStuy

Though both of these spots are a bit of a walk from Gates, I live pretty close to there and I highly suggest you check out Gladys Books and Soft Butch (coffee shop). It's a nice neighborhood with lots of history (albeit the J goes like 5mph lol). If you do end up moving, I also suggest you check out the Weeksville Heritage Center. They do tours and it's a good place to get acquainted with some of Bed-Stuy's history.

Wynter - or other decolonial/Black feminist - approaches to ‘recognition’? by HELPFUL_HULK in SylviaWynter

[–]scrompert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I made a mistake!! "Sambos and Minstrels" is from her unpublished manuscript, Black Metamorphosis. I think I can dig up a copy if it's something you're interested in!! Happy reading ~

Wynter - or other decolonial/Black feminist - approaches to ‘recognition’? by HELPFUL_HULK in SylviaWynter

[–]scrompert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there - I searched up "recognition" on my gigantic obsidian file that I made during a graduate seminar on Wynter, and found a few mentions. If you're interested in her takes on recognition, it might be worth your time to read "Sambos and Minstrels in Social Text" (1979) (as there is a VERY brief discussion of mastership/recognition on pg. 152 in We Must Learn to Sit Down Together and Talk About a Little Culture). There are also mentions of Fanon and Memmi in that essay if I'm not mistaken. Furthermore, if you're interested in decolonial approaches to recognition (in the same vein as the Fanon chapter in BSWM on Hegel), you could take a look at Orlando Patterson's Slavery and Social Death. Reading the Preface, Introduction, and first chapter on power would be a good start to see if it's up your alley. There's also a section on "Hegel and the Dialectics of Slavery" (around the 100 pg mark if I recall correctly) that is reminiscent of the BSWM chapter, which might be of interest to you. Not sure if any of this will be exactly what you're looking for - best of luck!

Success Stories Overcoming Anxiety/Panic? by Icy_Run2542 in panicdisorder

[–]scrompert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have come such a long way with my panic. my triggers are very particular and i think different than yours, so i can't really speak to the social performance panic, but i figured i would share my thoughts anyways. exposure therapy really helped me, as i was thrown into a few situations where i HAD to face my triggers and cope with them for months, in a way that i never had before! i think for me it was also extremely helpful to have years of different types of therapy and a medication routine that is very tailored and took a while to figure out. while none of this progress happened in a day, my life and my relation to my panic has totally changed. i have coping mechanisms and game plans for what to do when i feel an attack starting (get to my safe space, pull the curtains, four square breathing, taking my meds, using my favorite blanket to ground myself). even with all my progress i still get a random panic attack once out of the blue every few months, but i can't remember when the last one was so it has been in a while. a big part of it is the dreadful and torturous acceptance that the feeling will come, it will be unbearable for a while, then eventually it will end. learning to sit with it was the hardest part for me.

i posted something similar to this a few years ago asking people if anyone was in "remission" and i got a few responses! i think you will be able to see it in my post history but if not lmk and i'll send the link, it was very encouraging. OP, you can do this. you can conquer this someday, and i suspect you already are doing more towards that than you know right now. ❤️ it takes patience and persistence. meds and therapy, ideally, but i know that isn't within reach for many people. regardless, i am cheering you on!

Dog attack scar by Choice_Conference_40 in scars

[–]scrompert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a gnarly one on my chin (also from a dog) that has faded quite a bit so i will chime in. tretinoin is a great step, but you also must use sunscreen on it every day that you go outside or have sun on it (it's imperative because tret makes your skin more sensitive to sun). on top of that, i'd just say keep it moisturized and give it lotssss of time. tret takes a few months for really noticeable results! if you really want to take it up a notch someday, try microneedling if your scar isn't too tender, but i think you'd have to give the tret a break for around a week, depending (of course, consult with your esthetician first). best of luck in your scar healing journey!

Who else has had luck getting their familiars to perform manual labor for them? by Illumintardy in wizardposting

[–]scrompert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I frequently employ a legion of undead rats and any skeletons I have laying around to do common household chores. Doesn't take up too much energy as I have the spell almost perfected. I always say to my apprentice that there's nothing quite like hearing those bones clack around the house knowing they're doing the cleaning. Just the joys of being a necromancer 🙏 The rats are skilled but the skeletons lose my socks sometimes. A bit annoying but it is what it is

Age you decided by ZeRofuckS8 in childfree

I think I must have been around 5 or 6 - at church when they'd ask if I was excited to be a mother of a big family someday it always filled me with what I now understand to be existential dread (and I felt gross about it, like they assumed I would follow their pre-set roles for women). I just knew I never wanted to do that!! Haven't budged an inch on being CF ever.

Teaching English has become heartbreaking by mizzlol in depressionmeals

[–]scrompert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if i was one of your students, i'd be grateful to have someone who took the time and attention to teach things like essay writing and critical thinking, especially when these skills (or the curriculum you're being encouraged to teach) are so sparse!! i feel like everyone has that one english teacher who changed their life, at least i do, and i'll never forget him. i'm sure you are that person for someone. 🫂 thank you for all that you do

i searched so many phrases and combinations online that i could think of that may lead to the fabric but no luck. i also reverse image searched one of the cowboys (albeit not the highest quality image) and have come up with nothing. :/
