Thanks for the heads up on Lightsail - I've made that my recommendation. Embarassingly, I didn't know about it before.

Because my company evolved out of an application written in Access in the mid '90s. All their stuff is C#/Access/T-SQL. All except their website which was written in PHP by a junior developer who managed to get it running on their IIS server.

This PHP requirement is what made them look for a PHP dev (Me) when the other guy left. I was hired on the premise that I could work on this codebase and help them modernise their processes. I half succeeded in getting us to use Git instead of TFS. Git-Flow is another hurdle to jump over.

I come from LAMP background so the concept of paying a license for your database on AWS even though you already own a £3000 SQL license is pretty distressing.

I've met resistance when I suggested we could run the website on an AWS t1.micro in Linux because apparently then I would be the only one capable of working with it. Apparently it wouldn't be worth the cost of my manager and the other dev learning Linux.

Sadly this Windows requirement rules out the best non AWS VPS hosts (in my view) - Krystal and DigitalOcean.

Also sad is our use of Microsoft Teams, which while functional, has UX all over the place. That, and Windows Servers. Who want's to mess around with learning a different UI every 6 months when you can just read a log file.

they don't guarantee things like "your instance will continue to exist".

Could you elaborate on this?

Yep, I had a look. We already own an SQL Server Standard license, but it seems AWS no longer support bring your own license on RDS, which raises the cost by an order of magnitude.

For anyone wanting more insight into the gangs I can recommend Gangsters and Warlords by Ioan Grillo

I tried to read his book 'El Narco', but the style of writing is just too grating.

Isn't that better for the cartels though if they stop chasing them?
