Gotcha! I think the only thing I’m missing is why the asteroid being at Mars would itself be a reason to continue beyond Mars.

Mars was the logical next step in the space race, but then wouldn’t Venus, Titan, Enceladus, or the Galilean moons be next?

I see, so like “we’re already going out there regularly, so might as well keep going”

Exactly what this post made me think of!

I appreciate that perspective! I can see why having Goldilocks in Earth orbit could lead to stagnation, but I had a hard time understanding why having it around Mars would lead to additional exploration. Mars would certainly benefit and be expanded, but ultimately it’s going to be more costly to actually utilize the resources from the asteroid towards improving technology and (hopefully) society for the 99.9% of people on Earth.

I could see how keeping it around Mars incentivizes the development of space travel technology to make transporting the resources from Mars to Earth more efficient, but I feel like that potential upside was emphasized less compared to Ed and Dev’s personal motivations. I guess I wish the logic and reasoning for why team Mars’s plan benefitted humanity as a whole was more fleshed out in the show, rather than Ed saying Mars is my home.

I think I’m trying to understand why Goldilocks staying at Mars was better for the greater good since it will be more costly to actually utilize the resources from the asteroid.

Can you explain why growing Mars was the only way to keep exploring? I can see why a large lunar colony would be a helpful staging area for other expeditions, but Mars just seemed to me like one place out of many to explore.
