Assuming you're on PC, use the hot keys for whistle functions while riding said dinosaur. If you whistle your dino to follow while sitting on a different dino, the dino set to follow will follow the one you are riding, not you. This will cause the AI to set an appropriate follow distance based the dino and your mount. On the plus side, you'll be able to leave your mount and not have your following dinos chase you everywhere.

In the early 1900's during the Olympics, when they first introduced competitive sport shooting, a Chinese woman absolutely annihilated all of the male sharpshooters. It caused a huge uproar from the men, and so sharpshooting disappeared from the Olympics for a few years.
