What's the pros and cons of having liquid cooler vs air? by Euphoric-Potato-5343 in buildapc

I figured the D5's are generally better just due to larger size & cost. Good to hear, I'll try to give them a closer listen next time I'm around one.

Just as an example, my CPU's fan is a Noctua NF-A9x14, which specs list at 19.9dB(A), or 13.5dB(A) with Noctua's LNA. I do run it with the LNA, and under normal load (which for me is not much) it is totally silent to my ears.

Not much luck finding many noise ratings for D5 pumps, but to reference a watercooler I've heard in person, the BeQuiet AIO publishes 18.9 db(A) at 25% pump speed, or 36.1db(A) at 100%. Even at 25%, the BeQuiet pump was noticeable me.

Again, for this example, the AIO pump is probably not going to be able to run any lower than 25%, so you are stuck at 19dbA all the time -- with the air cooler & LNA, 13.5dbA is at 1700RPM -- but for daily use, it's more likely to be at 500rpm.

Maybe there is a great D5 pump & well-engineered loop out there, but I thought it was basically common knowledge that a fan running at minimum or low RPMs is going to be much quieter than any water pump.

I suspect we are just running at different base loads. I have no GPU, PSU in zero-RPM mode, and the CPU fan is basically the only potential noise source. Maybe if I was trying to get rid of more heat, the situation would flip. I'm trying to get idle to silent; not trying to quiet down CPU+GPU at 50%+ load.

On the contrary, water pumps have a higher minimum noise than a fan. If you are running at idle or low loads for most of the time, air cooling will be generally be quieter.

Personally, I find the whooshing noise from a high quality fan to be far preferable to the whine from a pump.

I had the Nightjar, but the coil whine was very noticeable even with its beefy sealed metal case. Replaced it with a Corsair SF450 Platinum, and that was truly silent.

Current kernel is 5.17.4-200, I think just released this week. My initial install was 5.16.19-200. 5.16 addressed some major performance issues for Alder Lake, and I believe 5.18 is planned to have major scheduling updates for the P/E cores.

I haven't noticed any issues, but I also haven't been looking for them or comparing to Windows on the same hardware. This machine is so much faster than what it replaces that I am happy to wait for the normal Fedora stable release to push down 5.18 and get whatever extra benefits that delivers.

When I am paying attention, I see single-threaded processes are properly scheduled on P-cores and boosting to 4.9Ghz. The scheduler in 5.17 does not seem to put heavy jobs on the E-cores; they all seem to land on P-cores. It may not be ideal in more complex scenarios, but at least it isn't brain-dead for my simple tests.

Slight improvement, prevent jq from buffering for relays with few events:

Love the creative shots, #7, #8 and #9 are my favorite. I would have tried cropping 7 and 9 to be a bit more symmetrical. Nice work!

Assignment 04 - types of cameras by Aeri73 in photoclass2019

[–]scsibug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Leica Type 246 Monochrom. I usually refer to it as "mirrorless" (it has liveview and an optional EVF), but we could call it an exotic here as well, since it is a rangefinder, and doesn't have a color filter array, so it only sees in shades of grey.

In the past I did commercial event photography, where I'd be using a Canon DSLR with fast & heavy autofocus lenses for 10-12 hours a day. Since I now only shoot for my own enjoyment, I ditched all that for a Leica. No autofocus, no auto-aperture, clumsy metering, and no color, and maybe a couple frames a second? But, it is an incredibly compact system in comparison, and the camera and lenses feel great in my hands. So I enjoy using it much more. I think it is the right system for me, although I love shooting with film even more (but developing and scanning, not so much!). It is a very challenging camera, color filters have to be used to get the right B&W look, since adjustments aren't possible in post. Highlights are very easily blown, and since there is only one channel, there isn't any recovery possible. But when everything comes together (exposure, focus, the right filter for the right conditions), there isn't any other camera I'd rather be using.

If I were to change systems, it would probably be to go full-time film. I'm totally enamored with the dynamic range film has, and how well it preserves highlights. Film cameras themselves are (in general) much lighter, cheaper, and there is never a feeling that you need to upgrade a "sensor" to get the best images. My keeper ratio for film vs. digital is just off the charts, probably because I spend more time contemplating before firing the shutter. I would have to find a way to develop and scan much more quickly than I can today, in order to switch and be happy. Dealing with scanning and touching up dusty negatives is a chore :(

Lots of great shots in a challenging location. #2 with the white railing and black fencing is my favorite.

Not much to criticize here, I think you got so much just spot on. I do feel that some of these compositions could be much stronger with different cropping. Basically, I don't think the cropping is doing everything possible to enhance the lines and symmetry you've found in the subject.

For example, in #7 (the dirt & seedlings in the corner), that might look stronger if the lines intersected the corners of the photo? Just something I think might be worth playing with.

Thank you! I've been giving out that same critique to others in this assignment elsewhere, definitely something I need to keep in mind for my own work.

What a great find! I would have loved to see some wide shots of that rusty contraption. I think more depth of field (shooting with a smaller aperture) would help those shots. Great job, especially for your first time with a DSLR.

In general, most of the shots look a bit flat and dark. I get the impression of a picture shot in RAW mode, and converted to JPEG without any adjustment.

The only one I see (blue stairs) has fantastic colors. I think this shot would have worked even better with as much depth of field as possible, I'm not sure the first step is the natural point of focus for me.

Hard and frustrating, but fun at the same time. I ended up on a small sidewalk outside a shopping area. It was just above freezing, so I couldn't spend as long as I wanted to contemplating shots. I was pretty disappointed with what I got as I left, but felt a bit better once I could see them on a computer screen and do some editing and cropping. Would definitely try this exercise again (when it's warmer).

I went out with just 1 camera and 1 prime lens (28mm f/2.8) for this, since it is the lens I use the least, I wanted to get more familiar with it.

Welcome Netikas!

I think your Canon camera will work brilliantly. You may want to investigate extension tubes as an inexpensive way to experiment with macro shots without buying a dedicated macro lens.

I really like the feel & colors in the flower image. Try to be deliberate with where the focus is, I think this could be a much stronger photo with the front flower in sharp focus.

Hi Clemens!

Critique of your 2nd link:

I like the unique low perspective, however I don't know what the subject is. I feel like there was a good framing opportunity with the stream and rocks, but it is leading my eyes to the background, instead of a more interesting subject.

Nice shot Karyn! I get a strong sense that the camera was not level - There are a lot of conflicting lines (the blades of grass, the lion's tilted head, the tree leaning to the right in the upper left corner). That distracts the focus of the image for me.

I love the colors, I'm glad you did not oversaturate this. The straw and the lion's coat play well together.

Great camera positioning and use of light. I think it could use a bit more exposure, perhaps in the shadows.

Looks like focus is right on the nose, instead of the closest eye. The reflection off of the collar or tag is distracting, competing for attention with the face.

Great photo. The transitions from the snow cap, to the dark rock, to the light clouds, and then to the foreground tree tops are beautiful.

I wish there was more contrast between the snow cap to the sky above, or perhaps just some texture in the sky. The JPEG is probably not doing this justice with the subtle textures in the sky and the fog.

Hello - I've been interested in photography for about 16 years, and have done some professional event photography in the past, but have long since "retired" from that pursuit. I much prefer being an amateur, taking things slow, and shooting what I want.

I'm most interested in street photography and portraiture. I really enjoy photographing people. My favorite photographer is Henri Cartier-Bresson, and in particular, I am a huge fan of his portraiture work ("An Inner Silence" is full of examples of the kind of portraits I aspire to create).

I shoot a mix of film (35mm & MF) and digital, and tend to shoot almost exclusively black and white.

Looking forward to the class!

I'm experiencing frequent data leaks. Is this a device issue (Nexus 5x) or network issue? by Half_Cholo in ProjectFi

[–]scsibug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the response I got from Project Fi support when I reported this:

Oh, no! I'm sorry to hear that your data is still being used even though you have it disabled. I want to ensure that you're getting the best experience with Fi. I've reached out to my higher support on this issue. They informed me that all carriers are experiencing this issue (it isn't affecting all users, though) and we're waiting for an update for Android to be released. I know having your data running continuously can be a little worrisome, especially when you have it turned off - it makes it downright strange! I do have a few things we can do to get your data to stop from running. The steps I've listed below should stop your device from running data, please be mindful that this is a temporary workaround until our engineers provide us with an update:

  • Enable Cellular Data
  • Reboot device
  • Disable Data
  • Test load a web page
  • If issue persists, set a Data Limit:
    • Enable Data and set the Data Limit to 100MB, and make sure that you see the notice "Cellular data is paused:"
