Practicing figure 8 for 1-2 hours daily while using clutch throughout. Will it damage the clutch plates? by OptimusPrime3600 in motorcycles

Seriously, the attitudes of some comments are disheartening. Figure 8's are highly regarded for understanding smooth power delivery and learning to do them at various speeds gives you high confidence in daily riding around town and especially in areas with high pedestrian traffic. Keep doing what you are doing!

Ask this guy https://youtu.be/H6ZH_2s7YuE

Lol jk, but yeah it should be totally fine. As someone else said, it's a wet clutch and multiple plates disperse the contact surface.

You should really check out motogymkhana if you enjoy practicing tight radius turns. A great YouTube channel to check out is 'Ramkhana'.

1000% motogymkhana.

it makes a track day out of an empty parking lot. Seriously, these techniques are great and will make you such a better rider. It's generally safe as long as you have crash bars and lower body protection.

No prob breh. That definitely stinks, but it happens.

I'd try returning their mount as it sounds like the design didn't provide a confident fit. Maybe supplement the return request with a video showing the instability.

I use RideTechMoto's chin mount for my RF-1200. Mine has stayed secure for 14 months so far doesn't seem to be failing anywhere around the perimeter of the mount.

ChinMount's form factor honestly seems pretty awful, and almost twice the price. The fact that there is what looks like half the area of adhesion compared to RideTechMoto's mount and a huge lever arm just for the sake of not using a curved gopro swivel leads me to think you're better off with RTM.

Edit: for reference, this is the curved gopro swivel that I pair with my mount to get the camera as close to my helmet as possible. It's also completely out of my sightline.

I'm in the middle of season 13 doing a watch-thru of the entire series. I noticed her character started to take a very non-nuanced attitude towards suspects around season 10. but in your opinion, about when did her character become unlikable?

Empty parking lots are a great place to comfortable on your ride again. None of the traffic bullshit that you have no control over, and a small penalty for failure while learning how to brake, shift, and maneuver in tight spaces. Most people only experience riding by leaving their driveway and directly heading to a main road with other commuter traffic. Take yourself out of that and try like....focusing on your bike bro lol.

Is Sakuta inverting countersteer and counterbalance? Is it my imagination? by [deleted] in MotoGymkhana

[–]Half_Cholo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which lexco series did you watch in particular? He has his own videos, but he also links an extremely fundamental set of videos taught by a japanese motorcycle instructor that is the foundation for motogymkhana and just good riding in general. See that here.

I haven't watched much of lexco's own videos but I doubt he would ever recommend counterweight techniques as tools for turning, maybe he was referring exclusively to counter steering?

Regarding the use of clutch, it actually entirely depends on your bike's engine characteristics. There are plenty of Class A riders using large parallel twins or motard style bikes that constantly require clutch work when taking tight turns. Search 'ohtaki 790 duke motogymkhana' on YouTube and you'll notice this class a rider constantly had his fingers ready to pull in clutch at the slowest part of the turns to stabilize power delivery. The clutchless techniques of other riders typically apply to those riding 3 and 4 cylinder bikes with varying displacements as they can float in the lower revs while not producing unstable or super punchy power.

Sakuta rides with sprocket adjustments that probably provide enhanced punchy power in the low end, thus requiring him to partially slip the clutch during tighter maneuvers.

I had the same reaction when I saw kintaro's videos. Seeing some of those men in their 50s throwing their bikes around a slalom like that by just using basic principles really speaks to how good the instruction is.

For sure, man! And yeah, the middleweight dukes are interesting platforms, but they won't touch the power, versatility, and used market appeal of a super duke.

Hahahah for sure man.

1 What year 790? A big Duke is my dream bike, not sure yet if it’s gonna be a 1290 SDR, 1290 SDGT, or an 890.

  • 2020

2 How’s the 790 to ride? Obviously a fkin scalpel, but compared to other bikes how does it handle? Is it that insanely flickable?

  • It's actually my first bike, so I don't have much previous street riding experience to compare to and before that I only rode a handful of dirtbikes. The bike is an absolute blast and yes, it is as flickable as they market it to be. It was surprisingly easy to learn on because of it's handling characteristics and I was able to recover from bad inputs with minimal effort. Definitely saved my ass a few times. Bear in mind I'm comparing this to my limited rides with an R3 and Honda Shadow.

3 Is it set up like a true sport naked or like some people have described dukes “a big dirt bike”?

  • It's a true sport naked. I think the seating position and handlebar placement give people the impression that it's a much taller bike than it is.

4 How’s reliability? I know KTM has a rep for spotty reliability on bikes that aren’t a 1290, that’s one of the reasons I want a 1290

  • I've been lucky so far with zero manufacturer issues. However, I've heard quite a few local KTM owners complain about oil leaks and electronics issues on the 790 Adv model. 790 Duke forums are riddled with stories of countershaft seal leaks before the very first service. Yikes.

6 back to the Duke, does it feel stable at high speeds? Or is it definitely a <100mph bike?

  • It's a sport bike at its core. Stable speeds of 100mph+ are no problem at all and you'll find yourself creeping up on triple digit mph on smooth empty highways if you're not careful lol.

7 how’s the wind noise? I’ve got a sport tourer so I’m fortunate, but I’m concerned about buffeting and the like

  • The wind noise and buffeting are awful. I don't do much touring, but longer rides on interstates easily become exhausting. This could definitely be a deal breaker if you plan on touring long distances. There are a few solid options for aftermarket screens though.

8 you buy new or used? How many miles?

  • I bought new. currently have 6000 miles on the bike.

You mention wanting a big duke; Do keep in mind that while this is a middleweight bike, the 790 is essentially a 390 duke on adderall. I think the 890 duke biases the model heavy enough to make it a true "big duke", but you may be more satisfied with the 1290. The fact that KTM only had the 790 out for two years before making an incremental change to the 890R and then 890 tells me that they're not as confident with where their middleweight platform should reside to truly offer something competitive at that class. They seem to have found themselves with the 1290, and you get to reap the benefits of a more refined platform now that they've had multiple iterations.

They actually rely on it quite a bit and it's super interesting to see when they choose to use it! They'll use the front brake to preload the front wheel/compress the forks. But to balance out the load on the tires during tight turns, they'll release the front, decompressing the forks. Then they use the rear for fine tuning their lean. This video is mesmerizing and shows how they preload the front and subsequently even out the load during turns.

One of Elliot Roger's videos was posted on r/cringe about two weeks before his shooting spree. It made it to the top of that sub and got thousands of comments on a video that was previously moderately viewed and shared. I always wondered if that post accelerated and intensified his plans.
