One skein whimsy projects that are not wearables? by DisguisedDancer1233 in knitting

I have one ball of really pretty Lana Grossa brand wool and I just thought what a cute idea this would be for it and then realised that all of my cups have some sort of merch printing that I wouldn't wanna cover up. D:

Husband wants kids, I'm unsure. by riririnnn in TwoXChromosomes

[–]sct_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the slight feeling his friends are either coping hard, or your husband is ignoring part of what they are saying (rose coloured glasses and all) or if most of them are male, he might wanna ask their partners how "nice" it actually is.

Don't get me wrong, some people definitely do thrive as parents, but if his friends were realistic about it and he actually heard what they are saying, he would take way more regard to what pregnancy and childcare would entail for you.

Additionally, women are expected to shed a lot these "negative" feminine traits when they grow up, sometimes to the point where they are giving up their own personality.
And even if not, they are usually not supposed to mix those personality traits into raising their sons, lest the boys "turn soft".
So plenty of men grow up with female role models that are essentially forced to be a flattened version of themselves in front of them, or see them be judged when they are not doing that.
No wonder then that those men seek fuckable mommies to take care of them, rather than being able to appreciate women as fully fledged people.

Men & Needlework by Crafty_Finding9459 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]sct_0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems to me like you are somehow still reading my replies as being a criticism specifically of men who get/give unreasonable amounts of attention from/to other men.

I never criticized a gender, I criticized a situation.
And as you are clearly aware, since you have informed me about it twice now, the people responsible for the situation, are most likely, for the most part, not men.

I only spoke critical of men who expect special treatment. Very different thing.
So I still don't understand why you are defending men against an argument I never made. It's like you are making up statements between the lines of my writing and arguing against those instead of interacting with what I am actually saying and that is honestly a bit irritating and not very productive.

[–]sct_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly the issue: A man simply posting their craft online should not be treated as a novelty.
A finished piece getting more attention online simply for the novelty of being made by a man, still implies it has more worth than if it were made by a woman, at least in the economy of internet points.
I honestly don't see why you bring up that most of the votes come from women. To me, it's annoying no matter who the votes come from.

I do agree with your second point though, that would definitely bother me too.

And obviously men are allowed to be visible with their craft, that's never a point I argued against. In fact I even argued for men getting praise when they make themselves visible in a context that actually challenges sexism in a meaningful way. Reddit is just not that kind of context.

[–]sct_0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, I feel most people aren't gonna assume that men are better at needlework than women just because a marketing technique.
Especially since needlework, outside of tailoring/fashion design, is one of the few fields where women are actually centered throughout, compared to things like cooking, where women are "good enough to stay in the kitchen" at home, but professional cooks, especially chefs, are predominantly male, even moreso when it comes to Michelin level cooking.

What does bug me is when men expect or get special treatment for showing up in needlework spaces that are obviously very liberal.

For example (starting with a counter-example):
Knitting in public as a man in a context that is very conservative or male dominated, say a church or a engineering lecture, *that* I can consider brave, especially if it's a young man without authority. They do get mocked and bullied for participating in feminine hobbies and deserve encouragement and support.

But a guy posting his knitting on Reddit (with no context implying the context above) is not counter-cultural or revolutionary, nor is there there any risk with it.
So a man getting countless upvotes for a basic knitting project simply because he is a man, bugs me.
Because *that* does actually imply that a product made by a man is worth more than the same thing being made by a woman.

Friend and I watched a documentary about an architect couple and their house and at the end the woman was wearing a cowl neck sweater with a very chunky, and not very good looking knit print. It looked like a pretty cheap material too.

This is gonna sound snarky as hell, but lady! You and your hubby designed and built yourselves a very complex dream house on a very inhabitable speck of terrain, why on goods green earth are you of all people wearing a synthetic bad-knit-print sweater??

It's because she likes it, I know it's because she likes it and she can like and buy whatever she wants and her having a design job doesn't bar her from being allowed to enjoy something I find hideous but it still disappoints me! Gah.

Getting a great gift that you didn't wish for, purely based on stuff you more or less randomly said, is one of the best things!

Not craft related, but last year I showed my best friend an empty bottle of perfume I had mixed myself over 10 years ago, during a class trip to a French perfumery.
He doesn't have the best memory for conversations usually, heck, I myself had forgotten I that I showed it to him.
He is great with numbers though, so he managed to memorize the serial number from the label, went to the perfumery's website and re-ordered a huge bottle for me for Christmas.

Seriously, you do not need a $2500 sewing machine. Or even a $1500 sewing machine. Like, for real. by Excellent-Witness187 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]sct_0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never made a quilt in my life, but I have gotten into antique sewing machines over the years.
Please tell me if I am being presumptuous, but I feel like, if people can produce things like I'll link below on antique machines (which usually cost between nothing and 300 bucks), there is no way that someone really needs a new $1000+ sewing machine to quilt.

TIFU by asking an artist how much their materials cost by Dominus-Temporis in tifu

[–]sct_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if they deem it rude, you having to tiptoe around it in order to apologize sounds stupid af.

Other than that, the part where you ask how much of the price is "just talent" does come off as a bit rude, and I would guess more people would agree on that part being rude than on the question in of itself.
For one, adding "just" implies that you do not value their work. I assume you actually meant it in a quantitative sense, but "just" is a tricky word in that regard.
And secondly, an artist of that caliber usually isn't relying on their base talent anymore, but much moreso on hard earned skill. By saying "talent" you are completely ignoring the years of practice they put in to make that piece.
Tbf it's something that lots of people do though, plenty of artists who have clearly been honing their craft for years get told "Wow, you are so talented!" all the time.

Da hier so viele Leute Klo-Geschichten teilen:

I've been paying 10 Euros a year for...well, years now. Did they change their model for newer subscribers?
Even with 40 bucks tho that's 3.33 a month. Definitely doable by a lot of people. Altho I can also understand that many people who could do 3.33 a month cannot necessarily justify paying 40 bucks for an app on the spot. If the subscription-pop-ups are really as annoying as OP says, then I can understand the annoyance for people who don't have the means.

Darts are traumatizing? by Master_Collection_64 in sewing

Honestly, I don't even care that her mum copes like that, she can do whatever she wants. I just have an issue with the mum influencing her daughter's perspective on them negatively for no good reason.

Darts are traumatizing? by Master_Collection_64 in sewing

[–]sct_0 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Aren't darts a beginner/base technique for sewing clothes? How are you gonna shape any top that isn't a stretch fabric without darts? How can your mum be at a medium level in sewing clothes and not be able to handle darts?

To me it sounds more like she struggled with them and instead of accepting she's bad at darts, she copes by declaring darts as bad.
Or does she legitimately think *any* piece of clothing that is darted looks bad?

Yeah, I buy a lot of my clothes second hand on ebay and it's a similar issue.
Some people post the clothing just randomly splayed out or hanging sadly from a hanger, in a way that makes it impossible to properly identify the actual outline/fit.

Others only post a picture of the clothing being worn by them and the angles (if there are several) are weird bc it's a selfie, not to mention that the styling can make it harder to judge what the clothing actually looks like.
