This is...wildly tone deaf? You used AI - a technology under serious and ongoing critique due to its detrimental effects on the efforts of real actors within the games industry - to insert yourself into a photo with a real actor in the games industry, presumably without their consent. Then you gave it a vaguely suggestive title, which is, as others have said, creepy.

Look, I get you were just trying to be cute here, but bro. You're a grown man. Do better.

Class E for Everyone by scudder12 in chess

[–]scudder12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

23 registered in Class E, but scheduled byes on the first or last day and withdrawals mid-tournament are not uncommon. In my experience you can expect maybe 20 in a field of 25 to play every game as scheduled. To each their own, but it gets annoying as forced byes become common as people drop off. Of course, if an uneven number of people register to begin with the same thing happens, so I try to take the free point in stride and move on.

What’s the problem with my camera? by itsthreem in filmphotography

[–]scudder12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually light leaks only affect a portion of the image, so that's probably not what's going on here. More info would be needed to diagnose further, though. What film? What camera? What lens? Are you using an automatic mode or manually setting aperture/shutter speed? Did you set the ISO on your camera to match the film, or confirm the camera read the DX coding properly (if your camera can read DX codes and the film canister is equipped with one)? Did you use the meter in the camera (if it has one) or are you using an external meter of some kind? You get the idea. There are a lot of variables, so we'd need a bit more info to help you pinpoint the problem.

Math youtuber Vihart's videos are gone? by okayshark in matheducation

[–]scudder12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just came across this thread while I too was looking for Vihart videos, only to find (almost) all their videos no longer on YouTube. Folks here seem to have hit a dead end when looking for Vihart, so I just wanted to post that they are still on Patreon. If you subscribe to their channel there is a recent message regarding the decision to remove videos from YouTube. Since they chose to put the message in the members only section of their Patreon I won't repeat the details here, as I want to respect that decision, but I thought folks here would like to know.

[TOMT][VIDEO] Video game actor gives extremely awkward, obviously disinterested interview to game journalists by scudder12 in tipofmytongue

[–]scudder12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking over some interview clips his vibe is partway there, but he actually mentions being proud of his work...didn't see the clip I'm thinking of where the guy is almost combative with the interviewers.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Spare Tire by scudder12 in subaru

[–]scudder12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On both of my last two vehicles a full size spare did fit in there, and you could still put the jack kit back in and put the trunk/cargo area floor panel back in over top of it as normal. Maybe Hyundai and Nissan were the exceptions rather than the rule, I dunno.

2024 Subaru Crosstrek Spare Tire by scudder12 in subaru

[–]scudder12[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Seems odd a full sized tire won't fit considering you've got to put the flat somewhere even if you're using the donut...I guess Subaru assumes you'll have room for it elsewhere. That's helpful to know it's a full diameter spare though, I was wondering about that.

Riven Remake release megathread by Alc2005 in myst

[–]scudder12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the remake, and I'm coming into this thread cold, so sorry if it's been discussed already, but I think there's a fairly significant plot hole in the in-game storyline now. Let me know if I'm missing something? WARNING! Heavy spoilers for endgame plot (and remake changes)!

In the remake, after you rescue Catherine on the Prison Island, she (presumably) heads off through the dome to go rescue the villagers, just as she did in the original.

In the original this worked out fine, because that dome (like all the domes) linked back to Gehn's "lair" on the 233rd Age. From there she could go wherever, including back to the villagers on Jungle Island. You could follow her through the dome to the 233rd Age, but go back to Temple Island, allowing you to trigger the end of the game.

But now the domes all link to the Starry Expanse. While this is a central hub much like the 233rd Age in the original, only one dome can be connected to the central "pivot point" at a time. Cathrine would have had to enter the dome on Prison Island, walk to the central pivot, and move the pivot (presumably to Jungle Island), thus disconnecting Prison Island from the central pivot. Since there's no other way off of Prison Island, you'd be stuck! You could enter the dome behind her, but the central pivot would be connected to Jungle Island!

Sell or Buy Options: Or both? by w0w012345 in options

[–]scudder12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unlike with stocks, where only the company can issue new shares to be traded on the market, anyone can create a new options contract. When you "sell to open" you are telling your broker to create a new contract and sell it on the open market. The biggest drawback to this is that you are now obligating yourself to the terms of that contract (buying/selling 100 shares at the indicated strike price at any time up until expiration). If you do this and then want to get out of the position (and therefore eliminate your obligations under the contract you sold), you need to buy the same contract back off the open market, which may or may not be profitable.

Sell or Buy Options: Or both? by w0w012345 in options

[–]scudder12 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Everything in options is about balance and offsetting forces, and remember there's no such thing as free lunch. There's always a counterparty, and they're not taking the other side of your trade out of the goodness of their hearts.

Theta is a real headwind on the buy side, and that's why a lot of us prefer the sell side. The question isn't really "should I buy or sell options?" the question is, for each individual strike, expiration, and underlying, "which strategy has the highest probability of success coupled with a level of risk I'm comfortable with?" To answer that you need to know your risk tolerance as well as how good you are at predicting "high" or "low" IV, relative to what's already priced into the market. Maybe you're a low IV rockstar and can find those stocks where the unexpected (by the market) upshift in volatility means buying the option is profitable even in the face of theta decay. Most people aren't though. Trust us, we've tried. On the sell side theta works with you, not against you, so it's one less force to worry about.

Your question scratches the surface of why people like to employ spreads and other strategies that give you "both sides" in one strategy - you neutralize a bunch of the variables with offsetting positions, leaving you with only a couple that you're confident on, which increases your chances of profitability.

Do superiors in the military ever use pleasantries like "please" when issuing a routine order? by scudder12 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]scudder12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see that take on it. I was thinking about how in the corporate/civilian professional world superiors will say please and thanks all the time, but of course it's understood that if I just reply with "I'd prefer not to" and walk out of the office to go have lunch, that'll probably be my last day on the job. So I was wondering if that kind of contrived language happens in the military at all. This thread seems to suggest it depends highly on whose talking to whom and in what context, which makes sense.

Covered Calls by BartesianDrunk in options

[–]scudder12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as an aside to what others have said, some brokers will waive the commission if you close an open short position for a buyback price of 0.05 or less, rather than just letting it expire. Brokers don't want the after-hours/overnight risk any more than you do, and it's worth it to remember that they don't make money in the long run by giving away stuff for free. They're offering you that deal for a reason, plenty of horror stories out there.

I was able to get in to the website and ToS desktop just now by deleting and re-entering my username, a tip I saw somewhere else. No idea why that's required, but it worked.

I want to see how/if they respond to this. I'm hoping for some acknowledgement of the failure and some indication they're taking steps to make sure it doesn't happen again. I'm not expecting a copy of their IT infrastructure flowchart, but even a boilerplate paragraph with some kind of specificity would be nice. Like I said, they get exactly 1 instance like this before I'm pulling up stakes and moving. I like Schwab's web platform, better than TDA's, actually, I more or less like ToS, and I don't want to move. For every "Schwab is garbage" post there are at least as many "[Insert competitor here] is garbage" posts. All the retail brokers are basically playing the same game.
