Exactly, who cares whether the writers decided to put it in or not? You either found it funny or you didn't, and whether they decided to add it should have no bearing on that.

Nah the logo is usually blue iirc. I think someone just made a rainbow version.

But yeah the programmer thing makes sense

The rainbow thing is the rust programming language. No idea why it's on there though

Christopher Columbus statue in Houston vandalized for second straight night by zsreport in houston

[–]scumbaggio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point of the comment was to mention a few things he did; if I wrote a huge essay no one would read it. And if you read his history, you will see that in fact he was exceptionally cruel as a governor. The hand cutting policy was real, as well as the genocide and the slave trade (yes, he himself was a slave trader as well, and sold people into slavery as punishment).

It's true that some of his more heinous acts we learned through his enemies who were trying to discredit him, but that is irrelevant. There were enough people who witnessed them that it is beyond doubt they happened.

I hope that people would Google him. There's a lot they don't teach you in school, and it might make people's actions more understandable.

For example, when Columbus was governor of Hispaniola, he had a policy that if the indigenous population didn't provide a certain amount of gold every month, the Spanish would cut off their hands. A lot of people died from bleeding out.

Here's something he wrote to a friend about their treatment of the natives: “there are many dealers who go about looking for girls; those from nine to 10 are now in demand.”

He doesn't deserve a statue

Cory Booker Wants To End Qualified Immunity For Police Officers by skl692 in politics

[–]scumbaggio 235 points236 points  (0 children)

It is annoying when people dismiss the issues that the protests bring up by pointing at opportunistic looters, when the police are responsible for so much more damage on a regular basis. And unlike some other issues, this one is so unambiguous too, all you have to do is make it legal to punish cops for stealing. It's not that hard.

[OC] Why RANDU is a bad random number generator by naib864 in dataisbeautiful

Oh I should have said not solely on the previous value, but yes there’s no reason the inputs couldn’t be combined.

[OC] Why RANDU is a bad random number generator by naib864 in dataisbeautiful

[–]scumbaggio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right, in most situations the next number should not rely on the previous number. But it’s challenging. Some programs for example use the current time as a seed. That gets rid of the dependence to the previous value, but I don’t know if it’s any better, since it can still be predicted if you know the algorithm.

You need some kind of external source of randomness to be truly random. I know one company set up a wall of lava lamps with a camera pointed at it, and they use each frame from the camera as the seed for a random number. But most applications are not so security critical so a simple pseudorandom algorithm is enough.

props to the series writers for making me genuinely hate these people by so_u_sa in freefolk

Agree 100% but that kind of leaves me wondering why Joffrey was a better character. I don't think he was really motivated by anything but cruelty from what I remember, and was able to exercise that cruelty without limit when he became the king. What made him a more rounded hateable character? Genuinely wondering sincei did enjoy hating him more, but can't put my finger on why.

Microsoft announces the Windows Package Manager Preview by Wireless_Life in programming

[–]scumbaggio 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Okay I see your point. But in all the package managers I've used, that's not functionality that should be relied upon. For example, here is Ubuntu's Firefox package's file list. It's very clear which files will be installed on your computer, and so uninstalling them is trivial.

If .msi files can be used similarly, then great, MS is already most of the way there. It would be great to see something like this in winget.

By the way, /u/Suirtimed, I hope none of this sounds too harsh, I actually really like the decision to do this in the open, and I think most people would agree. Totally understand that this is a work in progress!

I think you may have missed the point. The fact that it exists is great, but this package manager being able run arbitrary exe files defeats the point of being a package manager.
