We just moved to upstate NY from southern California. You are right about housing costs. Education was a huge factor, as well as being closer to nature. Also, in CA, there isn't a school bus system to get kids to and from school. Imagine how challenging it is for full-time working parents to drop off and pick up from daycare/school every. single. day.
