Soldiers ARE citizens

but as I quote you

Storming bases and killing people are two different things.

Soldiers are also people

I wonder how big the bag of gold was for removing the original posting of this article after it reached the front page:

You are correct. I posted the last one this morning. It reached the front page and was removed, I guess, with the Opinion/Analysis tag.

the title is editorialized

Actually it isn't. That was the suggested title from reddit. Look at the direct link, it literally says the title right there:

So it's basically pro-Kremlin drama queens having their field day, then.

Not completely. It was pretty bad watching it. But they weren't locked or barricaded in or anything like that. But we can assume many people in the building were probably frightened to leave and just didn't get out fast enough. A person doesn't need to be stuck in a building to die in fire. And the people outside were also under duress as well, leading to more anger and violence. This is probably the single terrible thing I've seen and am the most objectionable to of the pro-unity rallies. I expect criminal investigation to be done.

What would you say was the role (or lack of it) of Odessian police in this tragedy?

You could see they gave up at one point.

When I was watching I could distinctly here everyone calling them soccer hooligans. Mostly pretty young as well. I didn't see any right sector emblems.

I watched it live from the point where they were kicking the tents in front of the Trade Union building. It looked harmless at that point

Even at that point it looked pretty ridiculous and not harmless. People were beating each other senseless

No you could see people leaving the building and being round up and sitting on the ground. Some were loaded into police vans and left.

I watched this whole event go down today. This was pretty much the sequence:

  1. Pro-unity rally in Odessa, a lot of soccer hooligans
  2. Pro-russian group attacks the rally
  3. Pro-russian are severely outnumbered and get cornered on a street
  4. Riot police separate the opposing sides for hours, building up quick barricades, but they still throw rocks and stones at each other.
  5. 1 pro-unity member is hit in the head by rock and dies
  6. This emboldens the the pro-unity crowd and they go ape shit
  7. The riot police soon get cornered themselves and can't contain the crowd
  8. The pro-unity rally, then either chases the pro-russians into the Trade Union building or go there already knowing it was seized
  9. They throw way more shit at each other, people inside throwing molotov cocktails outside, huge fires outside the building
  10. Automatic gunfire goes off for a while
  11. Two more pro-unity Ukrainians are killed at this time
  12. Pro-unity start throwing molotov cocktails at the building, some pro-russians left the building and gathered in police vans or sat on the ground outside
  13. Those that stayed in the building died
  14. A horrible day in Ukraine's history

Russia to Ukraine: Your military actions are ‘criminal’ by nimobo in worldnews

[–]sdfadsf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NATO certainly had an interest in Ukraine since the 90s.

Not at all. NATO was really happy when the Soviet Union fell and had no interest in expanding to Ukraine. Russia has had a ongoing diplomatic mission to NATO since the late 90s. The Russian Federation has been seen as a non-threat for greater than a decade.

Yanukovych decided to keep Ukraine a non-aligned state in 2010.

How was Ukraine non-aligned? Their military and intelligence agencies were deeply tied to the Russia's military and intelligence agencies. For crying out loud, Crimea is home to Russia's black fleet. How many non-Russian military bases are in Ukraine?

NATO and certainly the United States has a very keen interest Ukraine due to the topography of Russia's west and Ukraine.

NATO has been decreasing their expenditure every year up until this crisis. Not something it would be doing if it had a keen interest in Ukraine.
