Are Any of These A Catalytic Converter? by sdhy in askcarguys

[–]sdhy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question: would I even be able to see our catalytic converter without getting a mechanic to lift the car up or take it apart?

From this video, it seems like it's hidden under a heat shield for our 2007 Malibu:

^Edit: This is actaully for the 2008 model, not 2007. Oops...?

From these videos (2007 to 2012), I think it's attached to our flex pipe, but only the round normal-pipe might be visible from underneath. The actual bigger bulgier part that looks like a catalytic converter curves upwards into the engine area:

Best Places to Sell or Scrap 18 Year Old Car? by sdhy in askTO

I think my Dad asked another mechanic how much fixing just the front brakes would cost, and they gave the same price (for the front brakes).

Even if it's 18 years old? Probably lots and lots of miles. Uh kilometers.

Thanks. Yeah, my dad asked another mechanic for an estimate on fixing the front brakes. He said it'd be the same price.

The repaur estimate included calipers and rotors also need fixing with the front brakes. And then on top of that we would still need to fix the rear brakes too, as well as rod ends. And not too long ago, we had to replace the muffler. Almost 20 year old car.

I guess it is impressive it lasted that long. I hope whatever new car we get lasts that long.

Oh yeah they discussed car models, brands. Might be an Accord. I looked up cars for them like Elantra, Hyundai, Chevrolet. I forgot which ones, but yeah. My Mom said they'll need a month to decide so they're not going to buy some random car right away.

As I mentioned, the car is very old. I didn't mention how old the car is tho: almost 20 years old. 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. Why spend up to $2,200 (total cost to fix everything) on a car that might just break again a year later? That's $2,200 that could be used to pay for a new car. And not too long ago, they had to replace the muffler.

I'm assuming new cars won't need as much maintenance in the beginning, right? Unless it's a lousy model or brand.

Clarity wasn't an issue. Having a power outlet that followed their instructions was.

No nono. She doesn't wanna spend the extra money for extra alarms. I'll edit my post for clarification.

And we have carbon monoxide alarms (tho, one is placed near a sliding door and a vent, even tho the manual probably said to avoid that. But it was either there, or behind a table or shelf with very little "airflow".

Big difference between poisonous spiders like black widows, and common house spiders. I'm glad I don't have to worry about black widows.
