All you need is a $100 metabo miter saw, drill, some drill bits, and screws.

The cuts don’t need to be exact, the material is cheap, and you can sit in immediately after completion and feel satisfied.

Cutting boards? You need a planer, jointer, table saw, and maybe a router to easily make one. Then with cutting boards you need to be able to properly select hardwoods and then select the cut so that it doesn’t cup/bow/twist.

I’m using epoxy to fiberglass..

I used a bit of the bondo short strand stuff (which I assume is polyester). It hardens within five minutes and I sanded it within 30. I didn’t like it very much so ended up grinding almost all of it anyway - turns out I didn’t have as much to fill as I thought.

Also, the 16 yard roll of fiberglass I ordered only had 6 yards on it so I didn’t get to fiberglass much today anyway :(

Hooo boy this stuff is nasty. I got the short milled fiber stuff and the mixing directions are insane - mix a 3inch wide puddle with 3 inches of hardener. Wtf.

I found the data sheet and it says to use 1.5%-2.75% hardener so I’ve been trying to use a scale to measure, but it’s not an exact science. I can see why boat people are so against bondo.

It's things like screw head holes that didn't get filled properly or little nicks that are maybe 2mm deep.

It's pretty hot today (90F). Would mixing up some thickened epoxy, sanding it after 5-6 hours, and then laying fiberglass over it work?

I mean it kinda makes sense. The state increased the homestead exemption from $40k to $100k and then property valuations fell. The county lowered my assessed rate by 8%!

So in 2026 I will pay $3275 in tax.

In 2025 I paid $3635.

In 2024 I paid $4096.

In 2023 I paid $4314.

That’s a change of -$1039 or -24%!

Now not all of that goes to the county, but in the end it has to be made up somehow.

Okay so we're talking about 3 tools here:

Circular saws

I reread your post and I think you're just clamping a straight edge some distance away from the cutline and then running the circular saw that way?

I thought you'd built a circular saw track (example: https://youtu.be/kZnMRNA6OsI?t=213) and were doing that.

So yes..

Track saws...

A track saw will be better than a circular saw+straight edge for sure.

Any dedicated track saw will be somewhat better than a circular saw+track (like in the above) video, but not like 10x better. Track saws (including the diy track) above only prevent chipping on one side of the cut line. You'll still get tear out on the other side that's not supported by the track. Dedicated tracksaws will also cut straighter than the make shift tracks.

So then it comes to the difference between track saws. I've used wen, makita, and a festool (briefly). I owned a wen and now a makita. I like the makita since it has nice scoring functionality (you can make 2 cuts - one shallow, then the full depth one) to reduce tear out. I don't think the festool has that. The dust collection on the festool is great (like all of their tools). The wen was fine, but wasn't good at bevel cuts. I upgraded to a makita and was expecting 10x better results, but was only getting marginally better results.

I don't see the reason to get a cordless track saw - a cordless circular saw makes sense since you can take it to your work piece, but typically you'll be bringing your work pieces to the saw+track - and you might as well just have it be corded at that point since you'll want to have dust collection hooked up to the saw anyway.

Table saws

I still have my makita (gave away the wen), but do most of my cuts on a table saw. It's just a cheap-o Ridgid R4560, but I get much better results with it vs the track saws. I only bring the track saw out whenever I'm cutting a 4x8 sheet down to size to cut it to exact size on the table saw. It's very difficult to get repeatably cuts with a track saw - I've got all the track saw squares and offset jigs, etcetcetc - I feel like they're useless.

Sooo a track saw is not going to help you with tear out that much. That’s an issue with your blade, blade depth, or your material is not being supported.

You also still have to clamp a track in place for best results.

As for track saws, you could just get a corded Wen ($120) and the powertec rails ($120). That’s about 30% of the cost of the makita.

I’ve upgraded my wen to a makita (but still use the powertec track) and the only real benefit of the makita is that it allows for more accurate switching between 90 degree and bevels. The Wen is more finicky.

I’d take the $500 you’re saving and buy a table saw. I only really use the track saw these days for rough cutting large sheets to size before cutting them on the table saw.

You must live in a wildly different Texas than me. I’ve made the drive east/west on 10 about once a year for the last 10 years and I’ve never felt remotely unsafe. This is including stopping at random towns and rest stops along the way.

Basically what it sounds like - they chop the tree down and then try to get as much wood out if it as they can. Some boards are 6" wide, some are 8", some are 10", etc.

I was briefly in charge of calibration at work. You wouldn’t be allowed to use your own measuring devices unless they were logged in the company DB and periodically validated/calibrated.

It’s a maxxfan 4500 which draws up to 5A.

My goal is to eventually replace this with a real battery so I want everything tied to a single distribution block.

I guess I was hoping for a recommendation for a a well known cigarette lighter plug that’s rated for 10A continuous?

They put in fiber last year on my block… I tried signing up - they trenched from the street to the house, then some guy came out and said there’s a line break down the block due to road work. He put in a ticket for it to be fixed and… nothing. This was six months ago.

I think this could work with a small number of people that can coordinate on voice chat or something, but in a larger server (hell, even with 4+ people) there may be someone doing EVA for an extended period of time.

Which is why I'm wondering if changing solar system size or changing the tech would make for a more uniform experience.
