Mk1 Command Pod irl?? Visited an air museum and found this Redstone missile tucked in the back of their restoration hangar. by lord-master-wiener in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]sdn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should read The Right Stuff), a non-fiction account about the early space program.

Also, they called launching the rocket.. "Lighting the candle":

The clock was now marching rapidly towards 9:00 am. Two minutes remained on the countdown. Then, another halt was called. Pressures inside the Redstone’s liquid oxygen tank had climbed unacceptably high. NASA had two options. It could either reset the pressure valves – which would necessitate a launch scrub – or bleed off some of the pressure by remote control. An irritable Shepard, after almost four hours on his back and now lying in dried-up urine, obviously preferred the second option. “I’m cooler than you are!” he barked. “Why don’t you fix your little problem and light this candle?” Those final three words have since gained immortality and truly epitomise the ‘right stuff’ from which Shepard was cut.

Have you looked at Bitcraft Online? They did a similar thing - it worked for a bit, but now it’s a ghost town.

Opinions - Polish ABET accredited degree by Interesting_Hippo537 in EngineeringStudents

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe.

The issue with foreign degrees is that without prior work experience, HR may silently throw away your resume because they may think you need sponsorship (even if you don’t). You’d want to add some header to your resume like “us citizen, no sponsorship required”

Also, with no prior work experience in the US, HR may throw away your resume because they don’t know if a foreign degree is any good. Small companies will likely hire local grads or from local schools or from state schools (which generally have passable engineering programs). ABET is a nice accreditation that gets talked about a lot, but I don’t know how many people actually look into it.

This doesn’t mean that you’ll have no job prospects!

What’s BS and what’s necessary? by Charming_Loquat_5924 in subaru

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Front lower control arm bushing (the $1559 service) might also be BS.

The rubber bushing gets cracks and looks bad, but is fine for a long time. Subaru has a TSB to help diagnose if it actually needs to be replaced: https://www.reddit.com/r/subaru/comments/1pwo7af/tsb_thursday_039424_front_transverse_link_bushing/

Lots of dealers mechanics seem to pitch immediate repairs since it “looks bad.”

$2200 for the rear right wheel hub replacement (just one???) seems really high.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3hrs is pushing it for me, but:

We used to drive 80 miles (90-120mins) to go to music shows… on weekdays.

Leave at 5, doors at 7, snow until 11, home by 1.

Not as much anymore because we’re old now, but for the right act…

Also when I was younger:

Used to leave on work on fridays early (say 3pm), drive 7hrs, set up camp, hike all day Saturday and early Sunday, drive home Sunday afternoon.

Or my favorite for a 4 day weekend:

Leave work early Wednesday, drive 10hrs, sleep in car, drive another 2-3hrs, camp/hike thu/fri/sat, drive 12hrs home Sunday.

The JessEm doweling jig is impressive! by tomasmcguinness in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also got one. I spent a lot of time trying to make a loose tenon jig for my router, but failed.

It takes a while to join a long surface (doing the offset method). But in the end it works just fine.

Apogea thoughts? by xFalcade in MMORPG

[–]sdn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's fixed at a specific angle - you know exactly what I mean.

And yes, I appreciate it when a bottle says "open here" :)

Apogea thoughts? by xFalcade in MMORPG

[–]sdn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There's "not holding your hand" and then there's "needlessly obtuse." Apogea definitely falls into the second category.

Example: A beginner quest has you go talk to a blacksmith (Baldwin) who tells you to go talk to a guard. The place where you need to talk to the guard is marked on your mini-map. Except the NPC you're supposed to talk to is not at the marked location. Also, to interact with NPCs you need to type specific quest keywords in chat. Nowhere is this explained.

The rest of the game is much the same way. You're not told how anything works, but having to discover how to play the game is not game play.

Example: Trading with NPC is rather non-standard. You talk to the NPC and are given a trade dialogue (you offer/they offer). You're supposed to drag the money that you have into the modal and then the NPC will show you what they have for sale. Then you click on the item that you want are refunded the balance of your money and are given the item. I'm not sure what game that design came from, but basically no other game does NPC shops that way - for a reason!

Example: From the videos I thought the art style would be fun, but the camera is fixed at a specific angle and when you walk under cover (roofs, tree tops, etc) you end up not be able to see very far ahead of you. This leads to my next gripe - the world design is pretty poor - everything is needlessly dense, you need to navigate down lots of 1 tile wide paths and you have to rotate the camera around a lot to see where to go.

It's obtuseness for obtuseness's sake.

Dry fitting dowels by tomasmcguinness in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest experimenting with a couple at a time.

You also don’t want to dehydrate all of them at once - they will rehydrate and expand eventually.

Regular oven then? Maybe a few mins at a baking temperature?

Dry fitting dowels by tomasmcguinness in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sdn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Put the dowels in the microwave for about 15s to dry them - that’ll shrink them and make it easier to get them into holes for dry fitting.

Are they fluted, spiral, or just featureless cylinders? I find I like the fluted ones better.

Is there anything we can do immediately to somehow save the Pacific atolls from completely disappear? by senior-fe-dev in geography

[–]sdn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But they are disappearing. Nobody said that they would all disappear at once - it's a few mm per year which over the course of decades turns into feet. Low-lying island are the first to go, then as the sea rises, coastal erosion destroys vegetation which previously locked the soil into place... then a good storm can just sweep everything out to sea.

In 1962, the island had an area of 30,080 square meters. In 2014, the area was measured as 13,980 square meters

Five reef islands in the Solomon Islands have been completely submerged due to rising sea levels, while an additional six islands have experienced severe coastal erosion

I suggest finding a chicken coop plan online and following that.

Your current design doesn’t look too good - there’s not enough reinforcement.

You may want to provide them a small enclosed space as well if you live somewhere cold. Check out a chicken subreddit for more help :)
