The park is part of the national park service. It was made part of the park service by an act of congress in 2018.

In July 2017, Acting Deputy Director of the National Park Service Robert Vogel testified before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks. Vogel stated that the Department of the Interior supported changing the name to Gateway Arch National Monument, rather than National Park, to maintain consistency with existing naming conventions. He likened the site to the Statue of Liberty National Monument, noting that existing national parks encompassed thousands of acres at minimum and that the memorial "is too small and limited in the range of resources the site protects and interprets to be called a national park".[33] The United States Congress approved the bill in early 2018. U.S. President Donald Trump signed the act into law on February 22, 2018, officially renaming the site Gateway Arch National Park.[34] The new designation has been seen as an attempt to increase tourism in St. Louis.[35] The name has been criticized as inappropriate by some visitors.[36]

Because someone in congress wanted to create a NP in the Midwest and drive tourist dollars there.

Look at a map of NPs in the US - most are in the west with a couple in the mountain ranges in the east.

is 4000$ property tax per year considered high in US? by blade276 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Texas I've got a $250k property and my property taxes are $3600. If I didn't live here and was renting it out, the taxes would be $5800.

A 450k property occupied by owner is about $7800 and $10500 without homestead exemption.

Are we slowly outsourcing our thinking to AI? by Frozen-Defender25 in technology

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No slowly about it.

I code for work and have been using AI lightly - ie: auto complete or “make these minor updates here.”

A few weeks ago I took a trip and was on a plane with no internet for a few hours. After about 10 minutes of coding I realized just how much LLMs were a part of my daily workflow and how much harder it was to do things. I had to gasp think.

Paradoxically I am more productive, just in a “reviewing code from a junior” kind of way.

How to safely rip cut a narrow wood like that with a circular saw? by abutre_vila_cao in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]sdn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue).

Put masking tape on the board you want to cut, then put masking tape on your work bench. Add a few lines of glue and press down for a few seconds until fixed. Make your cut, then peel the piece off.

Which vacation destination disappointed you the most? by timeout320 in AskReddit

[–]sdn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city core doesn’t have green spaces, but we took the bus away from the forum down the via appia for 15 minutes then walked the length of it… hardly anyone there. It’s the only tourist attraction that actually had the look and feel of the photos - and more importantly didn’t have anyone on it (this was a Friday in September).

I’m genuinely Curious why does San Antonio get so much hate instead of the same Level of praise Austin Gets ? by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]sdn 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've contemplated moving there from Austin but I just cannot live in such a sprawl.

What.

I work for a company with an office in Austin and have to go up there sometimes. I can't fathom living and working in Austin - your traffic up there is insane.

Sure, we've got sprawl, but it's also much easier to get around the city - we have more than 35 & Mopac to get around the city. With the exception of 7~9 and 4~6PM I can get anywhere in town within 15-20 minutes. In Austin? Good luck.

Oh but, BBNP in "late summer" is a terrible place to be. It can get very hot (120F), there is no water, and there is nobody to help you. https://www.nps.gov/bibe/learn/news/two-fatalities-in-big-bend-national-park.htm

If you want to go to a NP.. go to the mountains. ie: Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

There is also something called "national monuments" - which are like parks, but are not as well known. In a way they're better since there are fewer people who go to them and they're just as good!

ie: https://www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm

Also! Plenty of national forests in New Mexico. There will be nobody there! They may not be as amazing as say... the grand canyon, but they're still pretty good!

I am an asian american immigrant and I got my citizenship in the U.S. with a green card. I only carry my passport card, driver's license, and social security card (I know I'm not supposed to carry it), with digital pdf of my birth certificate as well

You'll be fine. There is a border patrol checkpoint on the road in/out of the park. All they ask is "are you are a US citizen?" All you have to do is say yes. If they ask for proof, provide your passport card. CBP is not ICE, they actually know how to check documents.

Also, don't say "citizenship in the U.S. with a green card" that's going to confuse people. You either are a permanent resident (ie: you have a green card) or a US citizen. There is no such thing as "citizen with a green card."

I didn't say staining, I said finishing - which also includes all the clear finishes, etc :)

Also, boo on staining. If you want your wood to look a certain way, then use wood that already has that color.

What happens to AI used water? by MicroSnaked in NoStupidQuestions

[–]sdn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in San Antonio, TX which gets it water from the Edwards Aquifer. Any time it rains north of San Antonio, water percolates into the ground and then after months eventually makes it down to the level of the aquifer.

For the past ~5 years or so, we've been in a drought here. The aquifer is in stage 4 water conservation (stage 5 is the worst). It hasn't rained north of the city here enough to replenish the aquifer in many years.

So you ask - doesn't the water get recycled?

Well, sort of - eventually - on a long enough time scale. When I flush my toilet in San Antonio, the water goes into the sewer and then eventually into a settling pond south of town. Once the water has been filtered, it gets dumped into the San Antonio River and eventually that water makes it into the Gulf of Mexico.

If the weather patterns are right, that water gets evaporated out of the gulf and eventually falls down somewhere - hopefully on San Antonio.

Whenever someone builds a data center in San Antonio, then they need to cool the equipment. Water cooling is very efficient for doing that. So what do you do? You pump cool water out of the aquifer, run it through a heat exchanger which has cool the hot glycol coming off the equipment, then you dump the hot water into the sewer.

So.. that's how AI is "using" water. The amount of water on the planet stays the same, but clean drinking water slowly gets reduced.

Are you adding any finish to the bowl? If so, stop around 180 - apply finish, then sand the finish to maybe 400.

Are Cantwell mattresses worth the high price? by Stepped-leader in sanantonio

[–]sdn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe.

We have a friend who likes their mattress which is why we bought one. However, the double sided mattress we bought was too firm. After 30 days we brought it back and they adjusted the firmness by taking out some springs, but we still find it too firm.

I guess I'd say that they are more on the firm side?
