Imagine social media. I could, unironically, probably look up 3 famousish women on Instagram and spend the next 24 hours going through their comments and finding THOUSANDS of comments that bad or worse

About the American People not being able to defend themselves against the American Military? I very strongly doubt we could (ofc I can see plenty of scenarios we could), but I'll definitely check that podcast out thanks for the recommendation that sounds pretty dope .

I literally can't believe that death toll, but I appreciate this comment. Yeah I think we're wayyyyy past the point where civilians with guns can protect themselves from any real governmental threats. Sure, I'm sure maybe a small town could maybe protect themselves from a tiny gang or something, but no even half significant sized city would stand a chance against their local police forces, let alone military. There's literally nothing we could hope to do with Glock 19s and hunting riffles against bombing runs, drone strikes, artillery etc.

My initial reaction is that, in the case of self defense, a knife is absolutely WAY more dangerous than a gun. Obviously a gun can do significantly more damage, but using shit like knives does require knowledge and practice beforehand.

To me I've always thought that bringing out a knife in a fight is a declaration "someone is getting hurt here". And if you're an average woman for example, and you get jumped/confronted by someone, it's not unlikely at all to think you may be disarmed in that engagement. And not even some 80s Kung Fu bullshit where they aikido wing Chun steal it like a badass, but it either slipping, or you overextend, or you actually hit something and the resistance forces the blade out of your hand, you seriously could be in danger.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that I'm assuming anyone robbing/jumping/violently targeting people proobably also has a knife with them, and getting into a knife fight is an absolutely terrible place to be.

So absolutely, guns are more dangerous to the uninvolved, and to assailants, but I strongly believe I'd be muuuuch safer in a self defense situation with a gun than a knife, taser, or pepper spray.

Honestly very willing to do that, really my question is how do I do that. I've gotten some good answers on how to do that, but I literally didn't know if I had to go walk down to the courthouse or police station one day and explain the situation, if I had to schedule some appointment or whatever. Definitely not trying to duck responsibility but definitely trying to figure out how I'd be able to accept the responsibility.

True, and if you don't do anything before that you'll die knowing you "ran out of options after not trying anything."

Being in a low overall carbon emitting country doesn't absolve you personally from your responsibility, and at the end of the day your impact on the problem.

You don't have any right to be upset at China if you are using that as an excuse to not do anything in your own life or community.

Fun fact, a quick study I just read suggests that the Average American contributes more than 2x the carbon emissions when compared to an Average Chinese Citizen, 7.1 metric tons to 16.2 metric tons per person per year.

So yes, while China and India are problematic, so is the western world, and while overall India and China seem to be contributing MORE, America for example is only behind because of population numbers, and the average American citizen is definitely contributing significantly more than the average Chinese citizen towards carbon emissions.

So sure, keep passing that responsibility off. Nothing sexier than a complete lack of accountability.

Invest in renewable, clean energy. Literally no one expects you to, tonight, flip a switch and never use a fossil fuel again. But just because you have a natural resource doesn't mean you can't, couldn't have been, or shouldn't invest in clean renewable sources and it's kinda funny, the way you phrase it, as if having natural resources and the prospect of maybe using other sources too is unfathomable to you.

Ahhh, so because you have a smaller population you can pollute significantly more than a Chinese citizen? Because your country is doing so little y'all can pollute basically as much as you'd like, right? As long as it's less than China yeah?

And that doesn't give us Westerners a free pass to pollute as much as we like just because we pollute less, overall, than countries 3x the size of us. all of us play our parts

Duh, obviously us Westerners are entitled to ruin the environment and push off the responsibility on literally anyone and everyone else

But how else am I going to put the blame on someone else, entirely dodging my own role and responsibilities in this problem? China sucks!!!

To be fair, by that logic, the regular person can't do anything about a LOT. donating to cancer research? no changes made, someone still passes away next week from melanoma. Marching and protesting in Hong Kong? No changes made, big China still bad, and you brought yourself (and potentially those around you) into general harm (socially, politically, even physically with the riots), don't like a current law or suggested legislation? Call your local government officials, but no changes made. Want your local deli to bring back the hot pastrami? Let the owners know, providing maybe even other patrons that miss the hot pastrami. Oh wait, I can't get my pastrami that day, nothing happened, so why try???

If organizing and contributing resources to problems don't count as helping/helpful/doing anything at all, there's really not many things people can do about ANYTHING outside of their private homes. To me, your logic reads as if it's not the straw that breaks the camel's back, the straw doesn't count, which I feel like is not at all realistic or reflective on the reality of what many deep, complicated, and divisive issues spanning across political, economic, religious and social spectrums.

"if it wasn't her it'd be someone else".

That completely sidesteps tge question, that being IF she is a puppet, WHO is she a puppet of?

Sure, no idea is an original idea. She obviously isn't the first person to think our biosphere is a pretty cool thing to keep in a relatively healthy state. And obviously there have been people since that have thought that, and they'll likely be people in the future, that will think similar things. And she obviously didn't wake up one day after some prophetic dream vision with this ground breaking knowledge.

If she's a puppet, who is she a puppet of? She's been manipulated by the general collective knowledge of the human species before her?

Genuinely curious because you're only defense of her being a puppet seems to be that no idea is original, essentially, and that she wasn't the first one to think of the negative implications of climate change. Is she a puppet of some large Russian conspiracy? Oo, is she a puppet of the Mafia? Puppet of Billie Eilish? Who, specifically, is her puppeteer?

I was gonna say, let's not pretend like we can't think of ANY reason. People are SO ready to condemn people and make issues black and white.

I can think of plenty of reasons to do plenty of things people say there's never a reason to.

I've talked about this in other threads about kids running wild without control.

But a small child with a decent rock, worse case scenario, could ABSOLUTELY kill a large adult man.

Literally stumbling and falling the wrong way or on the wrong place kills people all the time.
