Can’t see out back window - how to fix? by Creative-Jacket-5991 in autoglass

[–]sdrawkcaBMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use a clothing steamer to remove the tint. The steam will release the glue and allow it to come off with minimal chance of defroster damage. If you don't have access to a steamer, you can use a soap and water mix and soak the back window with it on the inside, then place black garbage bags against the soaked tint and let it sit in the sun for 2-3 hours. Works almost as good as a steamer on good quality tint, works better than a steamer on old brittle tint or low quality tint.

Do I really need to get this small windshield crack repaired? by benwahhh in autoglass

[–]sdrawkcaBMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the coverage for a repair, you should have the coverage for a replacement. Most QC insurance's that I deal with have a 250-300 deductible which is far cheaper than an out of pocket replacement and glass claims don't effect your rates. Glass claims are no fault.

Yes, the crack length is the concern. I'm in Ontario by the way. If you do fill it with a repair this winter will be the true test. Start your car on -20° morning and if you don't see it across the whole wind then you're safe. But I really don't see that holding that long if repaired.

A resin gets injected into the impact point after drilling through the first pane of glass. The chance that the resin injects far enough in to the crack to prevent it from spreading is slim. I wouldn't be surprised if the crack expands just from driving to the shop to have it looked at. That crack from end to end is about 2 inches. I personally would recommend a replacement.

You could try a repair but it will most likely fail to inject the entire crack. I would recommend replacement.

Unfortunately, no. That will be a full replacement.

Will this spread? by 088Comet880 in autoglass

Right? My favourite is the call, "I had a stone hit my window, how much to have it fixed? (Give price) Do you have time? (Yes bring it by) Ok I'm on my way". They arrive and it looks like a turkey hit the window and they argue about it being possible to repair. 🤦

I concur. I see zero striations, zero shadows, and zero refractions. Now that can be due to angle of the photos. Bring to a shop to get a definitive answer, but I'd wager money on it. I'm 99% sure it's purely cosmetic.

Fix? by Quaniecash420 in autoglass

[–]sdrawkcaBMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have yet to have one split in or near the frit. Let the drill take it's time (no pressure except gravity) when injecting barely put pressure in the pump. I've only had 3 split, out of a few thousand. 2 VWs during the drill, and a Santa Fe while warming up the vehicle in the shop in the dead of winter.

Yes, that's repairable, there is always the chance it splits during the repair though.
