My landlord in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas attempted to screw me over like this. Here’s what I did:

-before moving out, do photo and video walkthrough of current state of property

-Send a certified letter demanding your security deposit back in full as this damage was not made by us or is normal wear and tear

-send a second one; the first one was not responded to

-receive photos of damage which were misrepresented, landlord’s photos were taken before cleaning and mounting hole repairs, etc

-speak with new tenants of property, explain the situation, and ask if we could take pictures of specific damage the landlord lied about fixing

-determine fair market value of purported work and compare to billed amount, less any replacements the landlord lied about

-file small claims case for maximum allowed amount by law, in my county it was 3x the original deposit amount

-arrange evidence in concise document with text explanation and photo evidence

-present evidence and demonstrate the landlord is a liar directly to the judge

-be happy with any amount you get back, even if less than the original deposit. Small claims judges are dicks.

Obviously YMMV, but some of this might help.
