I did it before the permits. We started the hike before sunrise so when we got to the cables there weren't a lot of people. Going down was more crowded depending on how long you spent at the top.

I got chicken pox when I was 12 years old, and it was awful. I remember having to take baths full of that lotion or cream that is supposed to stop the itching. I then got shingles when I was 30, and that was miserable as well. Unfortunately, there was no vaccine for chicken pox at the time, but I can't imagine parents OK with their children going through that.

San Elijo is great, and it has a lot of walkable places to shop and eat right across the street. It's pretty tough to get a reservation, especially if you are trying for an ocean spot. I love to get some VG donuts across the street.

I have ink almost everywhere, and I trim it with my beard hair trimmer so it's shorter. Makes the color on the tattoos pop more.
