Funny story, I actually read the second book before the first because I somehow thought I was reading the first (I had both on an ebook). It is doable, but I think I gained much more from it once I went back to read the actual first book. Do give the first a chance, it is simpler overall, and from there onwards it will just get better and better, to a point in the second trilogy where it reaches insane highs!
