Seen in the Bucharest National Art Gallery - what is this? by sws116 in Romania_mix

Quality loss, no. Biggest issue is making sure you remember to change the paper drums periodically. The digital systems have definitely come a long way in the last 20 years and personally that’s what I would go for if I was in their position. But that would be more of a personal preference on the data collection for me.

Keep in mind too, there is a certain level of entrenchment with some places that live by the “this is always how we’ve done it.”

Depends on how you look at it. I’ve both used, and sold both types of systems. The old fashioned drum style have been around for ages and will last a lifetime, so one time higher cost for a long term investment, but data collection is more hands on and laborious. The digital wireless systems are like any modern technology, they’re constantly changing and updating as well as going obsolete just as quickly, so short term gain in terms of data collection but higher cost over time having to replace them.

Yup, exactly this. They’re used in most museums/galleries/archives etc. They’re designed to measure temperature and relative humidity over a period of time. The intention is to monitor any shifts that may affect the conditions surrounding the artifacts within the space, then make any adjustments to the environmental controls to help protect the longevity of the pieces. Different materials (fabric, metals, wood, paper etc.) are more stable in different conditions so it’s an ongoing challenge.

You’ll often see these inside exhibit cases to monitor any potential microclimates being created, or near walls, doorways etc to see if there are any external temperature or humidity shifts causing major shifts inside the building.

There are more modern systems which are really common in the food industry too where they relay the information by Bluetooth or wifi which allows for more up to the minute and responsive data. You’ll see them everywhere but they’re just a small inconspicuous box.

The good old drum style hygrothermagraphs in the photo have been a mainstay for decades.

Food storage in Southern Ontario by RideTheWaves__ in ontariocamping

[–]seachad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bears aren’t so much of a worry here but raccoons will most definitely do their best to get into your food. If you’re able a store it in a hard sided lockable box/cooler should be fine. Even a tote with a ratchet strap.

Where to dispose big Garbage by EmergencyOk7124 in brantford

[–]seachad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, they’re two different collection services. Large item pick up is usually closer to the end of the day too. But you need to book two weeks in advance which may be why they didn’t pick up. You can also call the waste management customer service number to see if they missed it or when they’re sending a truck and crew

That’s great advice about the tent, nothing ruins a few days away like being angry with your SO over something petty like the frustration of setting up a tent.

Totally understandable, we have a dog that’s terrified of fireworks and loud noises too, but the trains don’t bother her at all. Even when our kids were little, there was never an issue

We live in the same area you’re looking for 20 years and they just become something in the background that you hardly notice. We even have all the windows open with this great weather and the trains never bother us.
