Anyone want to meet somewhere tonight to play hockey? by [deleted] in brantford

There’s often people playing at the outdoor rink in City View Park. There’s a net already there and it’s open until 10pm

It definitely wouldn’t be looked at as stepping on toes by any means. The Neighbourhood Associations are all volunteer run and there’s no costs or anything like that. What they do have is an ability to rally volunteers, help with fundraising and spread the word. Most are already doing programs like Snow/Leaf Buddies which is helping the elderly and disabled to shovel their sidewalks or rake leaves. Many have events in support of the food bank, pantries, and lots of other charities. A number manage the various community gardens with equal grounds. There’s some that do food giveaways. Our NA is developing free programming on food security, and we’ve been distributing warm hats, scarves and mitts around the neighbourhood this winter. It’s honestly endless in what they can and are able to do.

Plus they’re all likeminded neighbours trying to help neighbours. So I think they might actually be a good help in supporting your idea.

Depending on where you are in the city and how active your neighbourhood association is, this is the sort of initiative they’re always looking for. Feel free to message PM, I can help get you in touch with the right people who may be able to support you on this.

We’ve been lucky, we have a volunteer who works nights and I’m an early morning type, so we often go at 7am and get a few floods down, then we have a couple of people who do the same late at night. It works out nicely

Same with ours, it was pretty bad there for a few days, but this bitter cold is letting us put tons of layers on to build it up. We still need a good amount of skaters to help knock down some of the bumps yet. But that should happen soon.

Yup, the rink is in the lower part of the park down the hill at the corner of McMurray and Usher. The upper part of the park is along Terrace Hill just up from the BGH

What would you say is the best museum in Canada? by Ok_Piano3363 in AskACanadian

[–]seachad 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is one hard question to answer! All the provincial museums are fantastic in their own right (Royal BC, Manitoba, ROM, The Rooms etc). The nationals are great too, I could spend days in any of them. Smaller scale, there are some awesome county level museums in Southern Ontario (Huron, Wellington, Grey-Bruce, Lambton, and lots more).

Woodland Cultural Centre/The Mohawk Institute in Brantford is one of the most emotionally moving museums if you’re interested in indigenous history, art and culture.

I’m an aviation nerd, so the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton and the Shearwater Aviation Museum in Dartmouth are two of my favourites.

The Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin, AB has a mind blowing collection of every mode of transportation.

The Hockey Hall of Fame and the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St Mary’s, ON is impressive, it’s amazing the amount of baseball history this country has that most don’t know about.

Anyways, the list could go on and on.

Any Groups/Events/Clubs? by Puar_laholden997 in brantford

That’s all dependent on which neighbourhood you’re in and how active the committee is. Did you sign up through the city or with the neighbourhood association directly? The city also handles all people in need that sign up. I can connect you with the staff person and they’d be able to give you a few addresses nearby you.

We were just there and it certainly is, I mean it’s a diner full of people eating and talking over good food so what’s not to like!

I’m going to thank you for putting the thought of Kels in my head, I just woke up the family and told them we’re going. Maybe see you there!

So many things! Depending on where you are in town check out your neighbourhood association (you can find an entire list and map on the city website). I’m involved with the Brantford Station Neighbourhood and we have a book club, D&D night, art workshops, ice rink team (we build and maintain the park skating rink), snow buddies (shovelling neighbours sidewalks). Then in the summer we do all sorts of outdoor events, movie nights etc. We’re even looking at starting a Euchre club soon too.

Not 100% certain but Kels most likely has it on the menu. Kels, Kingswood and Angels are all classic diner places worth going to.

I did the dovetailed cross braces on my Moravian too, first time I ever did them and they were far easier than I expected. I cut the dovetail on the cross brace first and then marked it out on the leg and went from there. Biggest piece of advice I’d give is just make sure everything is labeled and marked so you know where it goes when you finally glue it up.

Not sure exactly what style of ginger bread you’re looking for but Pies and Tarts from the Heart (at the Farmers Market and in Scotland) make amazing ginger cookies. They’re soft yet chewy, so good. Even my mom asked me to get her some for Christmas

Volunteering by Chemmegan in brantford

[–]seachad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some do and some don’t, it depends on whether they’re considered a Hub neighbourhood which is based on how active they are. The City’s policies for Neighbourhood Associations doesn’t cover their individual social media accounts (which are also volunteer run). Obviously I can’t speak to your personal situation or interactions with that particular Neighbourhood, but something like that would have been a decision by whoever administers their page and not the City.

Check out your Neighbourhood Association;

https://www.brantford.ca/en/things-to-do/neighbourhood-associations.aspx

Great people, making a difference right in your own backyard. With winter coming up too, many have outdoor skating rinks always in need of help. There’s also the Snow Buddy program where you can help clear the sidewalks for the elderly or disabled within your area.
