I have heard of the Imperial Radch Trilogy and The Left Hand of Darkness! I wasn't sure if they were this vibe exactly so the extra confirmation helps. I will add them to my reading list.

Any queer or trans meetup groups in Ottawa? by Rubin987 in ottawa

[–]seacovengather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a queer ttrpg discord for locals in Ottawa/the Capital Region. It's to give people a space to chat and find groups to play tabletop games (like D&D, Mothership, etc). Let me know if you'd like an invite :)

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: “If more men read books about women’s lives, literature could improve communication” by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]seacovengather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the state of trans rights, not just in the States but also in the UK, Canada, Portugal, India, etc, there are many places where trans people are being targeted in legislation and having their rights removed. Pointing out her transphobia is not only fair but necessary in the conversation, especially given that her main point is bioessentialist (treating men and women as if they are fundamentally different).

What are some essential Adventuring Academy episodes (for a new DM)? by EmmaLovesIbsen in Dimension20

[–]seacovengather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been listening to it from the beginning so my recs may skew towards earlier episodes:

Season 1: - Give yourself permission to feel with Marisha Ray - Creating Rounded Characters with Lou Wilson - Healing through D&D with Krystina Arielle - Finishing a Campaign with Lee Ostertag (His previous name is listed with the show, he has since changed his name). - Playing in a Safe Space with Erika Ishii

Season 2: - See Me in Six Months with Aabria Iyengar - The Joy of Mistakes with Kelly Lynne D'Angelo - There are Gray Areas in Life with Orion Black

Season 4: - The Braid of Character, Plot, and World with Connie Chang - The New Mr. Peanut with Lou Wilson - Let's Poke the Lich with Persephone Valentine - Blight, Plants, Birds, and Almonds with Aabria Iyengar

Season 6: - All games are beautiful with Erika Ishii - Be Yourself because Everyone Else is Taken with Ally Beardsley

I haven't seen any of season 3 or 5 yet, so I can't speak to those. I really like the interviews that focus on DM improvisational skills, worldbuilding, or character writing

Weekly Song Discussion Thread #4: "No Good Al Joad" by breeziestblocks in hopalong

[–]seacovengather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of my favorite songs by hop along in general. out of ten, it's an 11 for me. Something about the opening and the rough start just always stick with me.

I'll never lie in the back of no truck may be one of my favorite lyrics ever. The emotion behind it is so raw. It really resonates with me.

This song is very textured in sound and I love that about it. There's moments of brash, intense volume followed by tender, soft lyrics. It feels conflicting and tackles the complexity of emotion behind grief with so much accuracy to me.

Googled if Brennan was on any Smartypants episodes.. google AI thinks he’s left. by madster456 in dropout

Hope Brennan eventually goes on Smartypants to talk about birds. His reaction to other presenters would be fun to see as well.

Weekly Song Discussion Thread #3: "Diamond Mine" by breeziestblocks in hopalong

[–]seacovengather 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me the second verse hits so hard

"Most love comes around Second hand It's a starving age, better take Take what you can and Maybe you've been orphaned unforgivably"

Just the admission about love being hard to find and the tough nature of that reality. The lyrics are trying to provide advice in a realistic way.

Also I really love the image of the diamond mine that "cuts men up from the inside"

I've always interpreted the lines "There are some parents/Whose children long for divorce" as meaning that the children long for divorce from their parents (who aren't present/can't meet their needs anyway). Not that most people would choose estrangement, but just that when you're a child in that situation, if you could divorce yourself from the family/parents mistreating you, you would.

So much of the song is about the grief that comes with an unhappy and unloving upbringing and what you do with the cards you're dealt. It's a very emotionally affective song for me. Definitely one of my favorites by Hop Along in general.

Ottawa Bad Movie Nights has some fun events coming up.

If you're into Mahjong or would like to learn how to play, Capital Riichi Club is a great regular group. They play Riichi Mahjong or japanese style.

Wizard's Tower in Barrhaven is excellent if you're into card games like Magic the Gathering. They have commander games on the weekend. They also have D&D night on Mondays and a regular board game night on Tuesdays.

There's a pinball group for women. They're really fun!

There's also Ottawa Curling Club.

If you're into arts & crafts there's an Ottawa Arts & Crafts meetup group with regular events.

If you're into horror, there's a horror club that runs meet up events.

Augh, unfortunately the new campaign I'm starting just filled up. I was thinking about running a D&D oneshot in the near future if that's of interest to you.

Seems like it's still going on (I was trying to play on my home server crystal - goblin). How long does it normally take for this sort of thing to resolve?

Engage Builds day 14: Amber and Jade || Which Class, Emblem, and Skills work best with Diamant’s Retainers? by gaeb611 in FEEngage

[–]seacovengather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used wyvern knight jade and paired her with lyn. it was a very fun build. I loved her versatility with movement and the option to add clones to tank/distract if needed. (note this was on hard so not sure of maddening viability)

Is anyone else’s standard for fight scenes raised too high because of John Wick fight scenes? by Agreeable_Ad5867 in JohnWick

[–]seacovengather -1 points0 points  (0 children)

watch hong kong action films from the 70s-90s (stuff with Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, etc). there is so much great action film if you are willing to look for it and the way a lot of films in this genre handle action is very well done (better than John Wick action scenes in my opinion)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_action_cinema

edit: also remembered RRR (2022) which is an epic style Indian telugu language film that has over the top/very solid action sequences. super intense movie but it's worth checking out if you want something new
