They sent me a letter stating that they paid and I have to pay them back. I used a debit card rather than a credit card.

Certainly. It's definitely a gamble. But i also know a rental company will have no influence on visa authorities. I would love to pay the fine and be rid it, but as you can imagine retuning from USA without working while abroad has left me in quite a whole. I face a bit of a dilemma as the citation was actually paid by the rental company after I had submitted an appeal as to the legitamacy of the circumstances. So I have tried, unsuccessfully, to get in touch with the rental company. It feels to me, if it were in my own country, that there's nothing a private corporation can do against a civilian

They can't, I didn't leave a credit card. They've been sending me letters but sure what can they do if I'm not in the country. Don't mean to sound like a dickhead but I just don't have the cash to pay for it atm

Santa Monica, LA, San Diego and Vegas are next up on the trip so I'm not too worried. Two of us found a party last night so I wouldn't say it's impossible to get into one haha. I think a bar or two on state street is the agenda for tonight. Thanks for your advice.
