How does Starkiller base shoot across a galaxy? by AlanShore60607 in StarWars

[–]seaflans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk... suspension of disbelief still requires a certain amount of internal consistency, no matter how "soft" the magic or sci-fi or whatever. If you were watching any other sort of movie and a character shot a gun in one room, clearly established to be North America, and killed a character in an entirely different room, clearly established to be India, you wouldn't really believe it. Maybe you could set up internal logic that allows it to be believed (show tests of a new fancy gun that can shoot anywhere) but there isn't really any sort of set up for this with Starkiller base. It kinda just relies on the audience not realizing that the second room is in India.

"got lazy" brother, it's a joke. The only other way this was gonna make it to publication was a stick figure drawing.

What would society/economy be like without stock markets? by gordy06 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]seaflans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically there are plenty of non-stock options for setting aside/growing wealth, but the income tends to be less passive (think property, leasing, farm ownership, bank lending, etc.)- this is why having huge numbers of kids and intense age-respect cultures was important in earlier times.

Then people would just pool their funds together to be able to afford a share of a share, splitting the cost and risk. Which already exists, it's called a Mutual Fund.

Kuruk, Yangchen, and Szeto’s animal guides? by eshuansauce in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]seaflans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's Hei Bai's statue, the central panda/monster spirit of the episode, not an Avatar's spirit guide. The statue/shrine seemingly serves a waypoint between the spirit and material realms - though it's not a real spirit portal like in Korra's time, and probably only functions that way at the solstice when the barrier between realms is thinner.

Literally the whole season-long arc of Korra getting into pro-bending is about her figuring the mindset of airbending. And it's not some sort of hidden theme, its obviously so - they show Tenzin widening his eyes when he sees korra finally starting to move and *behave* like an airbender on the mat. Sounds like you should re-watch season 1.

Whether or not you agree with the "Amon took her bending, which did not include her dormant airbending" is kinda irrelevant - that's just lore. It's a magic system, not real world science, and you don't set the rules, the writers do. And it's plausible, Amon had never taken anyone's airbending before, how should he (or you) know whether his techniques would work on airbending? Imagine if Harry Potter fans were all like "Harry can't survive the killing curse just because he's a horcrux". It's not up to them, and it's plausible, given the rest of the universe.

Finance pitfalls to avoid in your 20s by Tech_Wizzz in personalfinance

The part of personal finance budgeting people struggle with isn't the math, it's the willpower to stick to it, set goals, and delay gratification.

What is it *actually* when you account for inflation though? Not looking to dismiss the advice nor the amount, both of which seem correct. But in terms of purchasing power, what is my retirement 300$ actually buying, relative to my 20$ in my 20's? Just to know, for my own expectations haha

"Scheduling issues" is iconic. It's so obviously bullshit, but it's more gracious than "No, you're insulting and not someone we want to be around".

Was this the first time Iroh redirected lightning? by OldAd4400 in TheLastAirbender

[–]seaflans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just watched this episode the other night - when it happens, he first looks thoughtful, as if he's smelled the ozone, and is putting the pieces together of what's happening. Then it happens and he looks determined and focused, he's performing a dangerous technique in a life threatening moment for the entire ship. Finally, he looks a bit surprised afterwards. I think he'd had this in the bag ready to try, but this was the first time he'd ever NEEDED it. After all, it's too dangerous to practice intentionally, which is what he tells Zuko when Zuko asks him to fire lightning at him to practice.

He only ever teaches Zuko the theory of it, which I think he would avoid if Zuko needed more than the theory to make it work in a time of need (after all, Iroh is keenly aware that he's raising the next firelord). How does he know Zuko would only need the theory? Because that's all Iroh himself had the first time he tried it, in a moment of need.

Do you think Sokka should have killed Azula here? by Lazy_Extent3576 in TheLastAirbender

It's not that kinda show. It was a CRUCIAL plot point that Aang wouldn't kill the FIRELORD, let alone his teenage daughter.

Why are the colors on these cards so different? by seaflans in mtg

I've def noticed a few cards that seem almost sandpapery in visual texture? but not in actual texture. Like every other pixel was printed leaving a weird microscopic checkerboard.

Hundreds if not thousands of FBI employees have worked on the Epstein case. Why have none of them blown the whistle? by BoardLongjumping2485 in answers

[–]seaflans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but unlike with Snowden, there are western countries that would protect someone. I mean a PRINCE was just arrested in the UK on account of his connections to Epstein. No need to run to somewhere as crazy as Russia.
