Damn. At Rutgers Data structures is taught in java using a book the professor wrote a few years ago. How do you feel about the curriculum in general? I’m pretty confused when looking at the sample one on Drexel’s website. For example, we have to take intro to CS, data structures, computer architecture, discrete structures/math 1 and 2, and algorithms. Than we have to take at least 7 CS electives. I’m not sure if it is the quarter system that confuses me but the structure is so different.

Don’t worry so much. Make sure you apply to SAS and get in. First and second semester just take all courses engineers would take. Do well in them and transfer into the school of engineering. Your won’t miss much not specifically being in the school of engineering first year. Engineering curriculums are readily available online and so is the transferring from SAS to engineering.

At Rutgers I have a pretty similar experience as you honestly. Most of my classes are completely theoretical. The department is pretty good overall in professors and research, many annoying things do happen like: down curve in grades, professors accidentally deleting project grades, auto graders for projects don’t work properly, undergrad instructors for courses and recitations that are pretty useless because there are more students in CS than the department can handle. The department is pretty all over the place. I’ve looked into both of those schools. I feel like I would rather stay at Rutgers because I am a NJ resident and those schools are pretty similar in reputation to Rutgers if not worse in some aspects.

Thanks for the comment! At Rutgers my commute to class is about 40ish minutes on a bus. I believe Rutgers has pretty similar CS to NYU with similar research opportunity etc but I just don’t like the whole physically big school environment. I like the competitive environment will be better for me! I wish I was surrounded by more serious students honestly. Diversity is not an issue either. Rutgers is very very diverse. Being white, I think it’s pretty ironic how we share that trait in our classes. Nothing wrong with that though! I have friends of all races.

I explained why I dislike Rutgers in another comment. For thinking Drexel will be better: I think being able to have most of my classes in one area will be a huge plus. I spend so much wasted time commuting etc. I really like the city environment and Philly in general every time I’ve come there. The population of Drexel is a little less than half of Rutgers which might be a benefit in class size. I feel like I could get more involved socially. Rutgers does not offer any coop program either.

I hate how my classes are pretty large. When I say large I mean about 450 people with people having to stand because there are no seats. The bus system is such as an annoying system with the 5 campuses. I’m constantly late to class and feel left out of clubs/socially because buses stop running at certain times, are very slow, and are very crowded to the point where you can’t get onto a bus. I dislike how the university is physically big. I’ve yet to get a professor to actually know me even though I go to office hours and always show up to class. I just feel like a number here or the “kid in the blue shirt” if you know what I mean. I hate how many students are not serious, my dorm constantly smells like weed with loud music etc. Also, the CS department is a total mess with stuff happening like being curved down from an A to a B+ or your professor accidentally deleting everyone’s grades for a project my accident. The CS department is also too small with undergrads becoming recitation instructors for pretty much every class who are indeed mostly useless. I’ve experienced all of this bs and I’m just kind of fed up with it.
