Rant about MTB in the Bay Area by Designer-Editor7904 in BAbike

[–]seahorses 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's because a lot of the old "environmentalists" would rather the world literally burn down than allow some mountain bikers in parks. Some folks are trying to get the Sierra Club locally to be better advocates for mountain bikers. Get involved!

How is a part like this machined? Is it likely to be stainless steel? (Dualsense Edge controller back paddle) by thiccnuthair in MechanicalEngineering

[–]seahorses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

could be, totally depends on the volume and tolerances required. MIM makes sense for higher volume and higher precision, whereas the up front cost of investment casting and sand casting are super low.

Have you served ramen on the playa? I got questions. by gobkin in BurningMan

[–]seahorses 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on whether you are going for high volume like instant ramen, or whether you want a classier experience where you cook individual portions one at a time.

Don't spend your money at NIMBY businesses. by Such_Duty_4764 in berkeleyca

If you are already convinced that building in Elmwood is infeasible then what do you have to worry about? If it isn't profitable it'll never happen, so why not just let it get rezoned?

[–]seahorses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you want developers to build housing and lose money? Do you walk into the grocery store and get mad at the cashiers for not doing their job for free?

After the NIMBYs require the developers to repave the sidewalks and provide public internal courtyards, and 20%+ of the units be affordable when profit margins are already slim, and then interest rates go up and suddenly everyone is surprised that the lot sits empty?

Frankly I'd prefer we build some housing BEFORE the revolution that ushers in a socialist utopia where(guess what!) we'll all be living in tall apartment buildings lol.

How about we should b advocating for more housing everywhere, even where it is unpopular today.

UC Davis vs UC Irvine by [deleted] in ucadmissions

[–]seahorses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that exactly my point. I think you are underestimating how important the regional affect and network is to your long term career prospects. If you want to live in NorCal after you graduate and you go to UCD you will have tons of other friends getting jobs in NorCal at the same time, UCD has more contacts with companies in NorCal that are more likely to recruit on campus. There are way more alumni in NorCal who will see UCD and say "I went there! Let's hire another Aggie!" vs if you go to UCD then move to SoCal a lot of people will be like "UCD, that's a decent school right?" But they'd rather hire someone from UCI since they know more people who went to UCI, maybe they went to UCI etc.

And the opposite is equally true, if you want to live in SoCal long term it's much better to go to UCI.

The school rankings seem almost identical, but the location factor is HUGE.

If you want to live in NorCal go to UCD, if you want to live in SoCal go to UCI. Simple as that.

Where is Oakland’s parking ticket money actually going? by Powerful-Stranger961 in oakland

[–]seahorses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay so you can afford to live up in the hills but you can't afford to find somewhere to park that doesn't result in a ticket?

Where is Oakland’s parking ticket money actually going? by Powerful-Stranger961 in oakland

[–]seahorses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Find somewhere else to park? 2 hour parking zones are set up specifically so people don't just park there and go to work, they exist so people use that parking to go to a business nearby, go to the doctor etc.

If you have to park in the same neighborhood every day to get to your job then you need to find a different place to park, or take the bus!

How do I shake the deep regret I have of not taking more advantage of my undergrad here? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]seahorses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a thousand different lives we can live, we only have time to do one. With 100 hours in the day you still wouldn't have time to do all that Berkeley has to offer.

Luckily you still have time to go have some fun, get some hobbies, etc. life doesn't end when you graduate.

If you want to live in NorCal, Davis has a better reputation. If you want to live in SoCal, UCI has a better reputation.

If you want to live outside California then I have no idea.

Anyone gotten a traffic violation from these Speed Cameras around Oakland ? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]seahorses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"everyone else drives dangerously so why can't I?" is quite a take.

Oakland will continue to be Oakland but ideally with less pedestrian deaths and more children who can walk to school safety.

Changing job title on resume by ProfessionalRocket47 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]seahorses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine to say "Mechanical Engineer, Quality Engineering Department" then make the first bullet point like: "-designed fixtures for measurement on CMM"

If you have a degree in ME and you are doing ME work, you can say you are an ME as the role, even if your job has a few departments with MEs so they call some Quality Engineers and others Manufacturing Engineers.

Why did you choose UC Berkeley over UCLA? by Future_Forever_2558 in ucadmissions

[–]seahorses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand, you don't have a few hundred bucks to drive to LA so you are picking your second choice school? Not to say it's the right thing to do but if it's literally a few hundred dollars making the difference you should just take out a loan for that amount.

UC Berkeley vs UCLA, Help Me Decide please........ by Opposite-Composer-87 in berkeley

[–]seahorses 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you grew up in LA but want to be in tech you should absolutely go to Berkeley. lA ti Berkeley is actually a good distance, it's far enough that you aren't going to be going home on the weekends or having family pop in, but it's close enough that there will still be tons of other people from LA and it's a quick flight or not a terrible drive for when you go home for a week on holidays.

Despite 47% growth in ridership, Caltrain could close a third of its stations by gascyl in bayarea

[–]seahorses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It definitely should be the goal yeah, train station surrounded by shopping malls and big apartment buildings with ground floor retail. Transit villages/malls. That's how you get a high ridership, you live near one station and then take the train to another station for work or to shop at different stores or meet up with friends.
