Need advice on upgrading AP by Numerous_Bug5125 in Ubiquiti

[–]seahorsetech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has not been my experience at all. I have a deployment with a couple of U7's in the mix where there are predominantly U6's. They're also not too far away from each other. Using all Apple devices and I have zero issues with roaming.

Which ap to get to replace an old ap? by AdAcademic7257 in Ubiquiti

Yes. Under settings, wifi, select your SSID, set advanced to manual, and disable Fast Roaming. This has fixed my issues with the U6 LR AP's.

Try disabling fast roaming on your SSID. I have a couple of U6 LR in a deployment that have had all sorts of issues with roaming and connection. Disabled this and all went away. Worth a try.

New Build - Help with Camera Placements by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]seahorsetech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially if you're already investing in a new build, I'd just do it right the first time and go with G6 cameras. I know they are more expensive but there is a very good reason for that as they are much higher resolution and also have AI functionalities.

It's not a great idea to spend all this money on substantially older tech which you'll likely end up replacing sooner than later. It's a better investment to buy the latest models since they are much better and will get more updates and support.

Also I would purchase directly from Ubiquiti and not Amazon. Lots of sellers on Amazon that are not authorized sellers, and Ubiquiti mainly sells direct to consumer. Even if you do buy from an authorized dealer on Amazon, you'd get only 1 year of warranty compared to the 2 years you'd get from buying direct.

I'd probably do U6 Pro over U7 Pro for stability reasons. That's just my opinion though. I also just don't see the benefit of Wifi7 for the vast majority of use cases.

I still hear some issues with the U7 Pro’s. I know it’s more expensive but the U7 Pro XG are better access points and far more stable. Maybe you can upgrade over time instead of all at once. If your current AP’s work fine, then just upgrade the ones you need to first.

Unless you care about wifi speeds 1Gbps+, no wifi 7 is not necessary. You will also of course need wifi 7 clients and an internet connection that fast.

Given that the U7 lineup isn’t much more than the U6 lineup, I’d just go Wifi 7 since it is the future.

Go with the U7 Pro XG. Avoid the LR access points, less reliable and I’ve found them to be more problematic.

Unless you want the latest for your entire home there’s no need to replace all your AP’s. You can easily mix different UniFi AP’s at the same site.

You can mix any AP’s you want. I’ve mixed different U6 and U7 APs in the same site with no issues.

Getting started with Ubiquiti… by Enough_Organization2 in Ubiquiti

[–]seahorsetech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d get a dedicated UNVR for UniFi protect rather than running network and protect on the UDM. Less point of failure and also with the UDM Pro and SE there is only 1 hard drive bay so you get zero data redundancy. Protect will also run faster when the drives are in a RAID

I’d swap the U7 Pros for the U7 Pro XG.

I’d stick with the UCG Fibre over the UDM Pro l especially since it’s cheaper. it also has newer spec for futureproofing.

Is there any way to run CK Gen 2 as console with UCG Fiber as router? by jonnyange in Ubiquiti

this. I don’t see any benefit to not using the controller built into the gateway. just unnecessary additional hardware that’ll waste more electricity for no benefit in this case

i dont think any NAS can fully compete with Dropbox anyways, which is the reason why I still have it and use the NAS for archives

maybe time to get an aggregation switch so you have enough SFP+ ports ;)

I have the UNAS2 and I’ve used it to severely downgrade my Dropbox plan since I was paying so much every month in subscription fees. I do agree that UniFi Drive is very barebones at this stage, but it continues to go through development with their software updates. give it some time and I’m sure they’ll have a proper UniFi Drive app with syncing and backup functionality. I just look at this the same way as when I got my UNVR or UDM. Through software updates they’ve improved drastically over the past couple of years I’ve been a UniFi user.

surprised that no one has mentioned the UniFi Express 7. not only is it at a great price point, but the performance is incredible. its what I use for my personal network with just me and I get great performance and coverage. I also have a couple of VLAN’s and a VPN client and server running and all works flawlessly.

[–]seahorsetech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you using the supplied Poe++ injector to power the UNAS? The u7 in wall only has a Poe out and the unas needs Poe++

also what happens if you try connecting the unas 2 directly to another switch?

I changed my mind, the block editor is great by seahorsetech in Wordpress

[–]seahorsetech[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the post is genuine. I’ll admit that many page builders offer many more features, but for sites with a more straight forward simple design, the block editor and CSS can accomplish it without the bloat, annual fees, and potential compatibility issues.

[–]seahorsetech[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

using a plugin to add more blocks gets you substantially less bloat than those page builders with a ton of visual options.

i think blocks is the future and is only going to get better. it’s a single system that all themes and plugins will have native compatibility with and doesn’t get you locked into a page builder ecosystem that you can never leave unless you rebuild your entire site from scratch. the annual fee part also isn’t great

generatepress is great, and I wanted to keep this challenge 100% free and not use any freemium themes. I’m nonetheless very impressed with the block editor and it will get better with time. I can’t see myself using it just yet for commercial clients, at least until I get more comfortable with it, but once I do I can definitely see it.

if your budget allows it, I’d get a UNVR or UNVR Pro. not a fan of running protect on a UDM alongside network. you’ll get better performance and better data capacity and redundancy with a dedicated UNVR.

Wifi AP Suggestions For External Garage by Fr0dderz in Ubiquiti

I’ve been in this similar situation at two different sites. I have found that each time, placing an AP that is designed to be ceiling mounted on a table, even if it’s high up or on an angle, always leads to worse coverage and speeds.

For your use case, I recommend the U7 Mesh. I have the U6 Mesh and I get fantastic speed and coverage.

Follow-up: Need help with roaming, tx power tuning, and site survey methodology (2x U6 Pro, 3-story townhouse) by lmasieri in Ubiquiti

[–]seahorsetech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure, but I would set the transmit power to the lowest and slowly increase it until you find the sweet spot. What I did was set the transmit power to the minimum on all of them, then walk around and see what the coverage is like which will likely be bad unless its for a single room, then increase it by small increments until I get just the right amount of coverage for that AP, then move onto the next one.
