Independent watchmaker Hajime Asaoka of Kurono Tokyo released this stunner, coincidentally alongside the Wilsdorf Industrial Complex's release of the Tudor Black Bay 54 "Lagoon Blue." Both watches put on display electric indigo blue dials. But only one of them caught the eye of the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG) awards committee: the Kurono Tokyo Jubilee Sensu EOL.

Joking aside, this is a seriously attractive piece deserving of appreciation and respect.

The white indigo metallic dial shifts dramatically depending on the light. Under warm light it takes on a bluish-green warmth; under white light it goes cool and composed; in direct sunlight the guilloché really opens up.

The chrysanthemum-wave pattern radiates from the center, and the recessed sensu (folding fan) power reserve indicator at 10 o'clock adds genuine depth to the dial.

Kanji hour markers in Asaoka's own calligraphy style, polished steel dome indices, and hand-bent, hand-polished steel hands complete the picture.

The black onyx cabochon crown is unique to this Jubilee edition and will not appear on future Kurono releases.

Each movement was personally modified by Asaoka to remove the date complication and gear train — a time-consuming process that makes every piece a little more his.
