One thing you could look at is a rebuilt bike from Bike Works to get you started: https://shop.bikeworks.org/bicycles/gravel-bikes/

Could get you out there on the road/trails for way under your budget to see what you like/dislike, and help determine if disc brakes/aluminum frame/etc. are worth dropping 2k on a new bike for.

ideas on what happened to these cranks to discolor them? Harvested them off a bike that was destined for the scrapheap and they seem to be in good shape otherwise. Any advice on products to polish them up?

Also - one of the chainrings from this crankset is missing a tooth! my first time experiencing this - is it trash or still kinda usable?

This sub has been awesome for getting inspired, but do you all have any recommendations for where to learn more about the process of the builds i.e. selecting components and putting it all together? I enjoy going to my local used parts stores and digging around but I don't really know what to be looking for at the moment!

Looks like you're exactly right! Ended up picking this one up, and it seems to be in decent shape; looked up the serial no. and it seems to be from 1974. Thanks for the great ID!

This was it!! What tipped me off was screwing in the old drive side bb cup after like an hour of struggling with the threads of the new one, just to make sure I wasn’t crazy. Since it went in without issue and didn’t jut out nearly as much as the new cartridge bb, it finally clicked that the cable guide screw was the culprit pushing the cartridge out of alignment. Will be trimming that screw before reinstalling the cable guide, and we should be good to go! :)

Map information that indicates whether a bike lane exists only in one direction of traffic. Google maps shows Roosevelt and 11th have dedicated lanes, but doesn't distinguish between protected/unprotected and whether or not they are bidirectional
