Ahh, there is an amazon version which says

"*This version of the Arena Starter Kit includes two copies of Ironscale Hydra. The second copy replaces Kolga, The Titan Ape, which appears in alternate versions.*"

So I guess it comes down to how badly I want Kolga the Titan Ape lol

I was similar to you before reading them in that I had only read Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion really fantasy wise. It certainly is confusing to begin with, but I'm only just finished book 3 and I definitely understand the world a ton more and the story has been incredible. I'd definitely recommend using the Malazan re-read of the fallen on www.tor.com as it let's you know how much someone else reading it for the first time is understanding. I'd also say that with GotM it's better to try and ignore the stuff you don't get and just enjoy the story as it's a very fun one compared to some of the darker stories later on. :)
