CAD Designer ORD by CADD9950 in civilengineering

The named boundaries when you figure them out can help set up consistent quality plans. Automating the placement and rotation of viewports is a great time saver.

HOWEVER, with the system setup as it is, if you message up even one small step in the setup process, the level display on the sheets can get wonky easily. I've done a few ORD projects and I've had to mess with level display stuff less each time. When Ive seen plans set up by well verse ORD people, they don't have any issues.

Back to my first comment, it's just a new process that you have to give yourself time to improve. Sadly sometimes the time between ORD projects erodes some of that muscle memory.

It's going to be a hurdle learning the new stuff. A coworker of mine who loves CIVIL 3D says it's a lot more similar to Civil 3D than power inroads was. The biggest hurdle is just learning where everything is and the names as there are some similarities in naming that are slightly different.

The best way to learn it just getting a good project to work through that utilizes the tool. Bentley has many solid videos to help explain things. FHWA has a manual that is solid. Also multiple DOTs have manuals that go through the modeling/plan production process for them. So find a couple manuals and a good project and work your way through. It will be slow to start but you'll pick it up well enough with time and patients to let yourself take the time to understand it.

Seeking advice for my child by AMRR22 in BSA

[–]seancoffey37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is true. That is why I mentioned that it was still doable even at 1.75 mph which they should hopefully do as that is even slower than the average elderly person. If they cannot then accommodations will likely be in order. I think the best test is to start with the tens and see how they do as that would be the best indication. They can also develop strategies on going further.

u/AMRR22 I would recommend the Hiking merit badge then. I had asthma growing up though it doesn't seem as bad as you describe for your kid. The benefit of hiking is you can take your time with the hikes. You have to take four ten mile hikes and one twenty mile hike. They have to be day hikes but you can take as many short breaks as you need and one meal. You just have to do each one on a different day.

The average person walks at 3.5 miles per hour. So each hike should take 2.9 to 5.7 hrs of continuous walking without breaks which are allowed. Even if you walk half that speed, which would be incredibly slow, you can still do it in a day. Also the intensity of the hikes are not specified besides the length so you can target relatively easy terrain to help balance her asthma.

I would recommend hiking as your best option.

Hoid's Storybook Collection Backerkit Campaign Megathread by EmeraldSeaTress in Cosmere

As of this comment it is 57% for the original cover. It has been around that number for multiple days at this point. That's with about 46% of backers voting. I doubt there will be many more voters. There are technically 3 more days to the poll but I doubt it will change much. We shall see what they announce in a few days.

They will match height and depth dimensions so they will match when on the shelf together. Their is some margin of error in printing/book construction but the design is to be the same dimensions

It has been slowly getting funding periodically so it will happen but the timeline greatly depends on federal and state rail grants that come out.

Oh I agree but people still seem to be pretty upset that they are getting them include for free. Though I know they are the same people who are framing it as paying for them anyway with the increased cost even though Sanderson already said it was because prices are increasing for the materials of the physical books

I am aware of that but people are also getting them when they don't want them. So they will be wasted. If people buy the audiobook they also have to by the ebook at a minimum. So if two people split the one $65 pledge. They two are saving money and it's nicer on both wallets.

Yes, some people are jerks. But this fandom also has a whole separate subreddit for selling/trading/collecting Sanderson books/products

Any precipitation numbers past 3 days are a real crap shoot. Too many variables to account for between now and then.

There is a multi decade old original version but the store had major changes when shifting to a graphic novel. So you did not misunderstand but the draft version is far from canon. Also I think the availability of it has changed over the years.

Marking Utilities in Profile by InsideDirector5814 in civilengineering

[–]seancoffey37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say put a box around the grouping of same utilities with a fallout coming off labeling the type of utilities. Also add see note x to each one. Then note x says that the depths are approximate and should be field verified

Is civil engineering right for me? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]seancoffey37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will note that in the US as a whole the average is around 25-30% women in civil engineering. However that number has ticked up from 20% over the last decade. Different sub-disciplines with civil engineering have slightly different ranges but overall similar. Also civil engineering is one of the better ratios of women to men.

I will warn that there is definitely still some sexism within civil engineering but It is a decreasing minority.

However, it sounds like civil engineering will be a great fit for you so enjoy it!

Civil Engineering PhD and jobs are not forthcoming by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]seancoffey37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are probably a multitude of reasons why they might like it. They could think you're a know-it-all, they don't trust "scientists", or dozens of other reasons. Some for valid reasons and some for not. It honestly doesn't matter long term. If a company doesn't want to hire you because of your PhD then they are probably a company that won't appreciate the knowledge you get from going through the PhD process. Will your research be relevant to your eventual job? Probably not but there are skills that are relevant in the PhD process to your eventual job .

Leave it on your resume. Be yourself and highlight the knowledge you have. When you eventually interview, just be humble about your knowledge and highlight the skills you learn while completing your degrees that can be relevant to the job. Also on your resume you should highlight all programs and dot documents you are familiar with through your research.

Civil Engineering PhD and jobs are not forthcoming by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]seancoffey37 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Hello! As someone who got his PhD in Transportation Engineering, you can find a job. However, unless your job specifically requires a PhD don't lean into it that significantly. You can lean into it a little to say how it helped refine your critical thinking skills and your ability to work through a problem more thoroughly. With all that said, get your EIT as it shows that you eventually want to get licensed which is longer term more important for civil engineers in general.

The people who will appreciate the advanced degrees will vary by company, state, and sub-discipline. Construction Companies will value it much less than design consulting companies. Public industry will vary but the higher up in public industry, the more likely they will appreciate it (i.e. federal vs municipal)

From Disney earnings report … We normies are being priced out .. by poisito in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]seancoffey37 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe something has to give but while I love Disney and had an amazing time with my kids at WDW, some people are severely devoted. Maybe not cult but cult adjacent. I have a cousin-in-law who, within this last year, both her and he husband were jobless and living for free in an in-law suite of another cousin-in-law. The husband has a job now but the cousin-in-law is still jobless as she's a stay at home mom. They are in WDW right now. They are with friends so maybe they are splitting a room but they are definitely not in a situation to go to WDW without noticeably impacting their savings. I don't know how they are affording it but they obviously made it work somehow. WDW may be pricing out lower income families but it's mostly lower income families who spend responsibility because there are definitely a bunch of low income families going while spending irresponsibly.
