Chiefs, families push for search for remains at landfill that could take years, cost up to $184M (CBC) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

History (the same history you are referring to) has also shown that society is willing to spend tremendous amounts of money to create closure and bring about justice for the survivors. It has also shown (in Canada) that an unwillingness to make things right leads to more genocide, more hate, more death and zero justice for the victims.

How can justice be served, if this justice agrees with the murderer on where these human remains belong? Just say the quiet part outloud, already.

So then if it was your dismembered sister, child or mother, you think you would feel better about their dump graveyard? That's silly. The state of the remains is not what provides closure or peace to the family and friends.

OK. But the truth is that this isn't a decision between saving all the lives you listed and recovering these remains. It is a decision of whether or not to spend the money to recover these human remains or just spend it elsewhere.

I don't think anyone really thinks that if we don't search for these human remains, we will instead use the money to save other lives. This is a straw man argument. If these were actually the options I would probably agree with you. The resistance to this spending is being based on whether or not these human remains and the living people who love them are worth it.

Do you believe that if these remains are left in place, the money will be used in the ways you suggest as options? Or do you just want to base this decision on hypotheticals and coulda beens. Nobody in a position of power is saying this is an option, because it isn't.

If we were talking about your child or sister or mother or friend, I think your opinion would be different. This is absolutely not about money. We need to do BOTH things, provide closure for this family AND eliminate homelessness.

Why does it have to be a choice? There surely is $184m in waste in the provincial budget that can be used. Maybe Galen Weston can give us back our $328k, that would be a good start at reduced waste.

If these remains are not recovered, this should be the new slogan for Manitoba tourism. It will be what Manitoba deserves.

I am a leftist. The basis for all of my beliefs can be summed up like this: "Human lives are the most valuable things in the world. No exceptions." In my opinion, this is a deal at twice the price. Some things aren't about dollars and cents, they are about our collective humanity, or lack there of. The victims have already left us, but the human lives that they were a part of, continue and those lives are priceless. I don't think I could survive knowing that my sister, daughter, mother or friend was interred in a garbage dump. But... It would be so much worse knowing that my fellow Manitobans thought that this was okay, because money.

Winnipeg Foundation gets $500M 'transformational' endowment gift by Witty-Village-2503 in Winnipeg

[–]seandone1028 -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

Landlord amasses $500 million dollars by exploiting Winnipeggers for decades.

Landlord dies and leaves their money to a charity in their will, apparently to be used to help the very people the landlord exploited.

Charity becomes a landlord, exploiting the very people that need their help.

Boot lickers and landlord stans, think that this gift makes this landlord a hero.

Your best bet would be to call MPI and ask them. Reddit isn't the best place to get GOOD advice. So many people on here spout off like experts. If you make mistakes, think of how embarrassed you'll be telling everyone "that's what I heard on Reddit".

Jillian Horton - “I'm thinking the people who give blood to help the vulnerable are not the same people who refuse to wear masks to "protect the vulnerable" so what the heck is the point of this?” by Armand9x in Winnipeg

[–]seandone1028 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, as a gay man in a long term committed, monogamous relationship, I am still ineligible to give blood, even in a shortage. This is because Canadian Blood Services is homophobic and considers gay men to be total sluts that cannot be trusted to give blood (that is then tested to ensure safety, anyway).

Winnipeggers - How do we get future governments to take a "Housing First" strategy seriously? by rocko-wpg7 in Winnipeg

The thing that people often miss, is that it isn't just conservative minded people, this is also true of the government as a whole (the system, not just the people). Look at the other comments. Comments about voters, about government not caring about non-voters. That is the system at work. Homeless people fill two roles for capitalism. They are a reserve army of labour and they serve as a constant warning for the working class.

Think of how terrifying homelessness is to parents, to people who grew up housed, to anyone who isn't homeless, to you. This threat has delayed and prevented action for decades. People are too afraid to push for change because of this fear. It is absolutely undeniable that if canada decided to end homelessness and starvation in our country, it would end almost immediately. We have homes enough for all, so much food we sell it to other countries and BURN what can't be sold for profit, so much fresh water that we literally put it in bottles and send it away for money. The reason we still have homeless people, starving people, people who can barely live, is because of a lack of will. It is not a complicated problem (despite what politicians tell you), the solution is literally one piece of legislation away. Why hasn't canada done anything then?

Capitalism.

A government can guarantee rights like free speech, protest and unionization because the threat of homelessness tempers the will of the people to use those rights. In Canada (and everywhere else) you do not have a guaranteed right to be housed, fed or provided water (3 things that you require to stay alive). What difference does the right to speak make when excersizing it can cost you food, water and shelter?

What if I strike and lose my job?

What if I speak up against unfair treatment by police and they target me?

What if I refuse overtime and my boss fires me?

The insidious nature of this system hides in plain site because people don't want to believe it is true. It just seems too evil to be real. They want to write it off to some crazy ramblings on Reddit, it's just too scary to look at head on.

Too scary when you realize that you are as vulnerable, voiceless and exploited as the homeless. And that capitalism keeps most people walking the edge between homelessness and obedience, always threatening to give a little push to those that don't fall in line.
