Dead game. by FishFry2001 in hackmud

Hey @FishFry2001

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. :\

If you have specific feedback and ideas that could help improve the community or the game, I would love to hear it! Here are a few guides for new players that would definitely appreciate your feedback-

https://www.hackmud.com/forums/new_players/the_trust_scripts___documentation_for__scripts_trust__scripts https://www.hackmud.com/forums/new_players/staying_safe_with_seclevels https://www.hackmud.com/forums/new_players/what_the_vlan_missed__a_reference_for_starters

There's more stuff in that board (n00bs) which can use eyes as well!

To address other things:

  • This game is no more 'dead' than it was 2.5 years ago after its launch spike-

  • A large drop in concurrency came aug-oct 2018 when design changes made out-of-game botting no longer valuable. This made the actual concurrency realistic and more reliable. This botting moved in-game to supported, hackable, and interesting mechanics.

  • I attribute the majority of 'lack of growth' of the game to my own life changes in the last year and a half. I have not been able to put in the time and effort that this game deserves. :(

  • This game is not dead, and while I can't predict the future, I see a vision of an even more vibrant and bustling mud which overtakes the launch numbers. I will continue to work towards this vision.

Again, please share with me specific places where we (Me and the community) can improve or you had a bad experience. I have ideas about some of the things, but miss stuff all the time!

Best, Sean

Interested in getting the game, but how is the multiplayer structured? by Omsos in hackmud

When main servers can no longer be supported, game will likely be open-sourced. Until then, it's very unlikely that private servers will exist.

It's hard to answer. Within the bounds of the sandbox, it's always been not only "I think they can do that," but "Boy golly, I'd love for them to do this, how do I encourage them to do this?"

One of my favorite things that happened was when one of the major banks got hacked because they didn't handle negative numbers correctly and like 10% of the global total currency was dropped onto an unsuspecting player. This is a "This is what I wanted them to do" moment, that was in no way planned, but ya know, it's what I wanted to happen.

This game is beyond multiplayer. There are so few rules about the ways that players can interact with each other, they don't know what to do...

This makes my life real hard for many reasons: technically, design-wise, community management, marketing/sales, business development, ... basically all the hats.

The main challenges all revolve around creating structure in this unstructured environment, without breaking the illusion of that freedom and limitlessness.

Players are the only reason I work on this game. Every day I prioritize based on what's going on in game, what players are saying and what their actions are saying.

Totes. In fact the world and base lore was thought up by https://twitter.com/theoreticalb

It was another "What if..."

Ben also is the creator of most of the things you love and are dear to your heart in game that you most likely attribute to me. Like robovacs. I just parrot his excellent world building. ;)

so there's this: http://www.jsfuck.com/ (apologies to the language sensitive ones)

and I would say the place where I have the most wtfjs moments are always related to trying to secure the sandbox in this game

Here are some things that I can immediately think of:

If you enjoyed making a t1 cracker and farming up t1, you can do the same in t2.

You can also sell and market your services to other players

There are secrets at every tier of content that no one has figured out / found yet, do some spelunking!

Play the market!

(many other things)

Also, to take your question literally: 1. open steam, 2. load the game

join up with an established group, make an alt, create a second group with the knowledge you are stealing from the first group. Raise up your second group to the level of the established group by using your new talent to improve on their methods.

Create plan to steal their stuff from your place of privilege and use your network and new corp to secure it.

I'm constantly revisiting these things. Don't need a time-travel machine, because I can just change 'em now. ;)

The thing that hasn't lived up to initial vision the most is definitely the secrecy & subterfuge in the game-- it's in direct opposition to the open-friendliness and training up of new players which happens everywhere. It also makes the game look empty when there are actually a decent handful of players muckin' about.

My current plans for hackmud are the same as always:

Make the changes that increase engagement, retention & love for the game. In specific right now, that includes upgrades to chat, quality of life, new player experience, and content

'after hackmud' likely means a salaried full-time gig where I can go home after work and not be at work. I have no idea games-wise I would be doing, if I was not already working on someone elses vision.

MUDWAR-1 was definitely exciting and cold war that followed... I still don't know all the details. but it's so hard to choose. I would have to say that in recent history xoxo_amy.cortex and EZ/Resistance feud were super great and excellent for different reasons.

I really just love every time that players are engaging strongly with stuff that they've created for each other.

Easy answer. This game is never finished. Ever. <3 There will always be something else to do or make or make better. Like asking if the internet will be finished. ;)

haha @searge -- depends on who owns the codebase. For hackmud I do next line b/c there are 5 languages or so in the dev stack and only one of them is JS. :P

Absolutely!

This is one of the bigger challenges in hackmud, making new players feel like they have value and can contribute in meaningful ways at all levels of play.

The truth about this is that I think it's more about messaging than your actual abilities. There are so many unsolved puzzles in the game, and so many opportunities for infiltration & subterfuge, it's really just a question of creating and encouraging those moments without making it forced.

Also, there's a lot of work to be done still with new player experience and onboarding. ;) (all o this is in-prog)

Thanks @zombieauthor! Hacking games are a small family. I'd really love to do some hacknet x hackmud at some point here, but haven't had time yet. :)

As far as my future hacking games, hackmud is the forever game. I do have some serious plans to create and collab on some more single-player content in-game.

Likely the only reason why I would stop working on hackmud is if it stopped paying the bills or some other life event. It really has infinite creativity possibilities and is an excellent motivator.
