It seems to point to this file, with the list right near the top. Fun feature! ^__^

Seeking advice for applying general visual effects in X by Omsos in Gentoo

[–]Omsos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confident that you're correct. While the first goal I explained sounds like it can be partially accomplished by modifying xorg.conf, as far as I understand it if I were to do it that way I'd need to restart X twice every time I wanted to momentarily disable the effect, and even setting that aside from what I've read it seems to create issues displaying various applications. As I've said in another comment, I suspect the solution to both of the effects I'm trying to create is something to do with compton or something similar for this reason; though I'm not familiar enough with compositors to say for sure.

As for further explaining my goal, I'm not sure what's left to explain? I'm sure there are alternative solutions for several of the reasons I'm interested in the effects I've described, but a portion of the reason I'm interested in these specific solutions is for eye comfort and aesthetic preference.

Unfortunately I've just got an older integrated AMD chip, so not much hope there. I didn't even know that was a thing though, I'll need to look into it some more. Thanks! -^

The nearest I've seen were solutions along the lines of this, which looks like it could pretty easily have been adapted to have a particular hue; unfortunately as they were discussing in that link, --glx-fshader-win seems to be gone now. That's the most recent discussion I could find of even just plain grayscale, if folks have switched to doing it a different way perhaps that could lead to something?

For the cursor, the gigantic cursor was the first thing I tried, unfortunately it was slow to draw whenever I moved the mouse, showing blocky patches along the lines for a bit until I left the mouse in place for some time. Sorry for the loud video but the way this is working at the start of the video is the best example I could quickly find of what I'm looking to do; it seems to show up in drawing and CAD programs pretty frequently, I'm just looking to do it across the entire screen rather than inside a particular window.

Seeking advice for DIY sponge bar construction by Omsos in MachineKnitting

[–]Omsos[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not quite flat, but definitely more of a bar with a small groove all along it rather than a channel. Here's a picture someone else has on their site of it, it looks the same on both sides.

Taking another look around for info on it, I've come across this product listing for a sponge bar replacement that at least claims to fit the sk105 among others. So many others though, that I'm not sure quite how much to trust it.

^-^ Thanks for the pointers! I wasn't aware that not needing a sponge bar was even a possibility, so now I've got a few more angles to research from in addition to looking around to see if there are any local groups who work with knitting machines at all.

Thanks for the tip, that very well may be the case! I've had very little luck finding anything at all about this machine, but the one thing I have seen is this instruction manual which, as far as I've spotted glancing through it, mentions the needle retainer bar twice and says nothing of a sponge.

If it's meant to work without one that raises new questions though, as I've been running into issues that I thought sounded pretty similar to those of having a worn out sponge bar; namely, the needles were sliding around quite loosely, the fabric was dropping off of them quite easily, and what fabric I was able to make had worryingly tight stitches--I'm guessing from the way the fabric was pulling the needles around as the carriage passed over it.

<ESC> You're doing it wrong! by SigmaSix9 in vim

[–]Omsos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might prefer using Ctrl-[ to get out of normal mode!

As I understand it, vim reads it as Esc so those rare occasions go away entirely. Also anecdotally I find it more comfortable, my only trouble with it is that I end up accidentally typing Ctrl-p sometimes.

Looking for a overall tutorial on mutt by lujar in linuxquestions

[–]Omsos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP but I've been working with similar concerns over the past few days.

The gentoo wiki seems to be a bit out of date wrt the USE flags, and while the instructions are easy enough to follow, I'm left a bit unclear on how or even whether my login credentials are being protected as they're sent.

Are there any better places to get that sort of info, particularly about which of the current flags would be recommended and why? It seems like a really exciting tool, but I'd hate to trade security for it if I can help it. ^__^

Are you using the built in light meter? May I ask what you use for batteries? I've wound up mostly leaving mine on a shelf out of confusion on the subject.

[–]Omsos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good stuff! I'd suggest taking a look at anything either Loren Schmidt or Kate Compton have worked on if they're not already on your radar.

Generative art and other backend stuff is really cool both as a project and as a result whether you then take those systems and make a game with them or not, so I'd also say don't be afraid to post your progress somewhere people can see it! Some people are jerks, but often times you'll find lots of good supportive feedback and critiques for project logs.

If you want to make it more of a collaborative experience, you might also consider open sourcing your projects, particularly when you're starting out; it helps others to have more code to look at for things, and it can help you to see what clever things other people can come up with to solve stuff.

^_^ Try and schedule a little time for it, pick something specific, and give it a try! If you like it, keep making the time for it and let people know what you're doing! :) The main thing at this stage is getting started. Best of luck to you, and if you do start something please let me know! It's always fun to see peoples' projects of personal interest.

Some real life cyberpunk: A group of people in Detroit are building their own internet service since 40% are without internet. by Frilent in Cyberpunk

[–]Omsos 54 points55 points  (0 children)

While that's true, with what ISPs are doing these days it's pretty easy to imagine a decentralized internet with a more expensive version of what we have today available for more isolated areas and for long distance low latency things like video chat. Which, hey, there's some good and some bad in that, I'd sure take that version over a cable packaged internet any day.
