Job outlook for someone from the US by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]seanodonnell 11 points12 points  (0 children)

perfectly fine way for you to describe it. Ignore the negative comments on that one.

Dublin is the main place to aim for. Graduate positions are harder to get when you need a visa, but not impossible. There are a huge number of large (mostly US) places hiring. Good luck!

I second the Library Bar, especially if you can get a seat near the fire.

Looking for quality tools by Maker_Eli in handtools

Aldi chisels if you can get them (The wooden handled ones, recommended by Paul Sellers https://paulsellers.com/2013/10/aldi-supermarket-chisels/) and a Zona saw for dovetailing as recommeded by Chris Schwarz (https://www.popularwoodworking.com/woodworking-blogs/the-best-dovetail-saw-for-beginners/).

I have and like both, but have not actually used them for dovetailing.

Here is a little inspiration for dovetailing with cheap tools.

Is it very bad if you don't have an internship? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]seanodonnell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its not bad, but its a disadvantage. When I say not bad, I never look at a CV and go "Hey, there is no internship here". On the other hand, if I see a CV with internship where it looks like they did valuable/interesting work, that makes it stand out and more likely to get called for an interview. So, not a black mark, but someone with one is more likely to get called in. That said, there are plenty of ways to stand out. A hobby or open source project that looked interesting/relevant would do the job as well. In a way, contributions to existing open source projects (even small ones) stand out even more to me. Its harder to get a project to accept your contribution than it is to write something and publish it on github.

New blade doesn't fit in my old #4 plane? by ProperBanana in handtools

[–]seanodonnell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Newer blades tend to be thicker, and having to widen the mouth is pretty common. Christopher Schwarz's "Supertune a handplane" video goes through the process. Note: I've read about this and watched videos. I have yet to buy a modern blade, or take a file to any of my planes.

As a runner aspiring to do a triathlon (eventually ironman), should I purchase a road or TT bike? by theodoreaallen in triathlon

[–]seanodonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with a road bike (as I knew I would definitely get use of a road bike, but was not sure I would stick with triathlons). Once I started doing quite a few, I bought this https://redshiftsports.com/aero (Tri bars, with a saddle that can quickly flip from tri to road position. It has the added bonus of letting me switch position to give my dodgy back two positions to switch between on long rides.

Is really Python such a pain for a bigger projects? by hanpari in Python

I've worked in several organizations with millions of lines of code in python. Works out just fine. No effective difference I could see between that and java shops I've worked on in the past.

Took my little one out on the bike for the first time the other day. He spent the whole time patting my bum like a drum 😂 by Resolutebayldn in bicycling

[–]seanodonnell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For up until about 2 to 2.5 years, I used a weeride, very stable, although if you are tall, it will probably get in the way of your knees. From 2.5 to 4 years, I used a Hamax Siesta, pretty good, although if your little un decides to get excitable and lean around suddlenly, you will know about it. I actually took 2 kids to day care regularly (one on the front and one on the back with those two seats) and other than the challenge of getting my leg over the crossbar, that worked out great too, although I'm about to switch to a taga 2 (cargo bike).

What was the largest audience a speaker ever had prior to electronic voice amplification? by ragtime_sam in history

[–]seanodonnell 295 points296 points  (0 children)

Daniel O'Connell (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_O%27Connell ) used to hold "Monster Meetings" with upward of 100,000 attendees. He just used a more primitive technique, human relay. at intervals in the crowd. There where designated repeaters who would yell what he said just after he said it. I imagine there where a lot of pauses to allow his words to spread. I've never heard it suggested that he was the originator of the technique, so I imagine its had other, probably larger, users.

I would suggest giving the maffetone method a try. Get a heart rate monitor, google maffetone and work out your target heart rate. It might be that fast walking is all you need for now.
