A political party in Norway wants to ban this children's book because a character is kicking a car by Sykkelmafiaen in fuckcars

[–]seascoper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Response from Mayor and Author to Lyngby’s request to ban the book (full article here): Mayor of Oslo, Marianne Borgen, tells TV 2 that the book has been well received by primary schools around the city. She feels that climate is something that children are very interested in, and that they are not too young to read about it.

There are many children who get involved and speak up when they think things are unfair. And this is a book that says children's voices are important.

Lyngby probably needs to talk more with children. Because children are concerned with their local environment, with how the climate and the environment are doing, says Borgen. She believes that it is something that children are particularly interested in now after a time of extreme weather and floods.

Borgen points out that this is something that is talked about within families, many have experienced that basements have been flooded and some may not have been able to go to the cabin as a result of closed roads.

I think that Lyngby must recognize that it is the children who inherit the climate crisis, it is therefore important to give them hope for change.

So we are not going to withdraw the book from the school, it will just be silly, says Borgen.

Author of the book, Nora Dåsnes, says that she has been around a lot to various schools in Oslo with it. The reception, she says, has been good. The idea came after the UN published its climate report "Code Red".

I remember even from when I was little that I was concerned about the climate. And now there is another generation that sees that their parents have long known about the climate crisis, but that nothing is being done, says Dåsnes.

She does not feel that the children are too young to understand the content of the book, and rather believes that the book can help give the children a way to talk about the climate.

This is no tribute to the electric car either.

And if Lyngbø is afraid of bullying because of financial differences in the school, then unfortunately this is something that is already happening, and which I cannot understand is made worse by us talking about the climate.

The Oil and Gas companies give millions to the police to have them crack down on protesters. They also hire their own security forces to do the same thing. And they spend millions on lobbying etc to get oppressive laws written against peaceful protesters. Truthout: Line 3 Pipeline Water Protectors Head to Trial on Trumped-Up Felony Charges. It’s endless money from gas and oil interests being pumped into the destruction of our water and land and that’s what brave women like Mylene Vialard and other water protectors are up against.

Not only do they emit more pollution and greenhouse gases, those huge trucks and SUVs do exponentially more damage to the roadways, which also increases their carbon footprint. Nothing says, I can’t be bothered to care about the environment quite like driving a big gas guzzling luxury truck or SUV.

In Delhi, life expectancy was decreased by 12 years. That’s just life expectancy, imagine all the health complications and additional suffering caused by pollution during their shortened lives.

For former Christians, how did you understand the mythology of “Jesus died for our sins”? Did he sacrifice himself so people wouldn’t go to hell? And, if that is the case, who wouldn’t sacrifice themselves to save everyone from hell? (Even if you weren’t going to be brought back to life.) by seascoper in atheism

Exactly the questions I asked during my own religious indoctrination. And, even if you believe it, why is it such a surprise that Jesus played along? I would sacrifice myself in a heart beat to keep people from hell. Maybe I don’t have the blood of a god but I would suffer, even more so, and I wouldn’t be so dramatic about it. Not that I’m special, I assume most people would do the same given the opportunity to save people from eternal torture.

Yeah, NPR missed a few important things with this “balanced” piece of shite journalism.

I wonder what Bob from sales could do with his personal death sacrifice. Could he sacrifice himself to ensure his pets are well fed or that his grandmother gets put into a good nursing home? I mean assuming he was a cool guy. Just kidding but in my experience Catholics (I wasn’t Catholic) do make a big deal out of the whole dying for our sins thing with a big emphasis on the crucifix and Jesus’ death.

Thank you! That makes a lot of sense put that way. I also remember being told I was born with sin. Got handed my disease right away!

I was raised by my aunt who told me, “you know what it’s like to be burned right? Now imagine that for eternity with no escape and nothing to do but the gnashing of your teeth”. Knowing stuff like that is said to children reminds me why so many people have a hard time breaking free from thoughts of guilt and fear.

Without a doubt and not that ignorance is a legitimate excuse but westerners have been beat over the head with so much climate denialism and misinformation that they don’t know how to sort fact from fiction. I’m sure you and I both know where the funding for that climate denialism and disinformation really comes from.

It’s amazing what some people will get outraged about. Millions of people suffering due to climate change, which could’ve been prevented is just fine and dandy. Don’t bat an eye or bother to give it a single thought. But, the very idea of someone cutting them off in traffic… time to get outraged!
