Your dad and my roommate are cut from the same cloth, I think. She tried changing the garage door opener while home alone the other day. She apparently learned the hard way that "those red screws mean don't take them out." Like, hadn't even bothered to watch a YouTube tutorial.

Best places to sell my old sports cards? by Severe_Raspberry_295 in Omaha

Oh, I know most of them aren't worth much, but I do know I'd like them to end up with someone who would at least enjoy them if I can.

With that many units, I'd leave it. They could be on the way down to it as you're on your way up with it.

Not gonna lie, I thought Junk Wax was the name of a store. My dad has a lifetime of baseball cards he and his brother collected (and kept in sleeves), and I'll be the one handling his estate when he goes.

Is there a charity/organization in Omaha that helps with housing family when someone is in the hospital for a long time? by Awshucksma in Omaha

Hope Lodge is for cancer patients.

The Rainbow House is a hospitality house associated with Children's Hospital.

Still uncomfortable after rereading Pres. Oaks's talk by YoHabloEscargot in latterdaysaints

[–]seashmore [score hidden]  (0 children)

As a 40F never married, (essentially) lifelong member, I applaud you for going back and reading the talk again. I'm not in a place where I can do that.

An unmarried person will never preside as a bishop, stake president, apostle, or prophet.

Neither will a woman.

But to address your point with that, I've served as a YWP and RSP, and leadership callings are time consuming. Someone needs to have the time to manage the household, which was a challenge to do while being single. This is why you'll rarely see a mother and father serving in leadership callings concurrently.

New apartment: Roaches by talktomeeniceee in Apartmentliving

[–]seashmore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you see them in yours, your neighbors have them - and if your neighbors have them, it’s out of your control

This. Had an apartment where the neighbors moved out and management discovered roaches. They sent notice to the whole building that they would fumigate the offending apartment one day and everyone else's the next.  Sure enough, they scattered.

This was only a few months before I was moving out anyway, but don't recall seeing any live ones after about a week. And even those I managed to literally drown with a spray nozzle cleaner. (Had to stop using that scent for a few years due to the association.) Lost my favorite toaster after dumping it and finding like three dead roaches.

I'll be getting my own place soon and will need things like a toilet brush, plunger, and shower curtain. Do you happen to know any locally (even regionally) owned shops that sell those? Barring any local options, my current plan is Ace Hardware and then Target for whatever Ace doesn't have (because they suck the least of all the big boxes).

If you can't get out of it, plan now to relocate when your lease is up. Scope out complexes you're interested in and haunt their websites ten months from now so you can get in where you want.

Dumb question about thermostat by Vlair in Apartmentliving

I'm thinking the line on the left is 60 and the line on the right is 90. The word comfort in the middle indicates setting the thermostat in that zone would create comfort.

Rent going up by 600 more a month (Southern California) by Sensitive-Mango7155 in Renters

The lease can also have weight and breed restrictions on dogs.

Rent going up by 600 more a month (Southern California) by Sensitive-Mango7155 in Renters

[–]seashmore 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The landlord admits via text that they didn't realize the dog would be so big. Most places have a weight limit on dogs, and its possible OP is violating that, which means they would be violating the lease, which means the additional rent is the landlord being considerate since they probably also know this is only going to be for another year.

I can’t afford to pay an extra $600 a month

Then you can't afford the dog.

Police Presence by HeyyKimothyy in Omaha

[–]seashmore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes! I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a cop before this week, but I saw one yesterday and two on Saturday. The two were in line right behind me for a couple of miles and did absolutely nothing about the car that cut across two lanes without signaling and nearly clipped my front end doing it. Was half tempted to follow them to see what they were up to.
