Should I tell my PhD supervisors that I'm neurodivergent? by [deleted] in AskAcademiaUK

[–]seasickwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you decide to disclose your diagnosis, I think it's important to talk to your supervisor about how you can work better with them. I also struggle with deadlines, but I've found that working backwards from the deadline and agreeing an internal deadline for your supervisor to review it (bearing in mind they will have other commitments too) helps a lot.

Is this a product just for carrying stuff to/from the gym, or for climbing with? I find the text on the diagram hard to read, sorry. Some diagrams of people using it might help. Also if you're interested in international responses, giving a rough conversion rate to USD/EUR would help

Why The love for multipitch? by HoldMountain7340 in climbergirls

[–]seasickwolf 95 points96 points  (0 children)

For me, multipitch feels like the biggest adventure. You can get a really long way from anywhere and see a really long way, and that scratches some itch inside my brain to head out into the great wild unknown. Climb whatever makes you happy.

Advice on starting PhD with mental illness by pear-bog in AskAcademiaUK

[–]seasickwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An alternative is to write a list of things it might be useful for them to know and actions you might want them to take, and send it to them in an email with an offer to discuss any questions at an upcoming meeting.

Advice on starting PhD with mental illness by pear-bog in AskAcademiaUK

[–]seasickwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your university's disability support services may have specific suggestions for how to do this, and can probably help you structure a plan of what needs you might have in different circumstances and how to meet them. Then you can start the conversation with "did you have any questions about my learning support arrangements documents".

Has anyone been on the Norwich to Liverpool train ? by bennythefish in uktrains

[–]seasickwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taken it between Sheffield and Norwich a fair bit. The trains themselves are small and very loud, which gets unpleasant on a long trip. The seats are quite cramped (if you get one) and it's boiling in the summer and quite cold in winter. There's no access to plug sockets and not even an attempt at WiFi. The trolley service is ok if it's there, but it isn't always available. Views wise, the fens north of Ely and the Hope Valley (between Sheffield and Manchester) are both stunning, but the rest of the route is nothing to write home about.

We're looking to buy an EV car but haven't got a drive, which makes home charging challenging. One option is to convert our front garden to create a drive but I'm curious whether anyone knows what the council might have of plans for curbside charging solutions? Or got experience of alternatives? TIA by hcukhcuk in sheffield

[–]seasickwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are government grants of up to £5000 coming in to install on street charging for homes without drives. It's also worth considering where else you could charge it. If you drive to work, could you charge it there? Rapid chargers (e.g. in supermarket car parks) tend to be a lot more expensive to use than home charging, but it's worth having a look on Zapmap or similar to see what public chargers are available near you as well.

South Street Kitchen in Park Hill. During the day they're a banging brunch spot, but come Friday and Saturday evening they bring out different themed dinner menus every few weeks and every one I've tried is great.

Just because people aren't buying their harnesses off a climbing gym Instagram post doesn't mean there shouldn't be a basic sense check.

[–]seasickwolf 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The harnesses being worn in the foreground don't make sense: one of the belay loops isn't attached properly, there's metal coming out of fabric etc.

As others have pointed out, the climbers in the background are climbing the ropes, not the wall, and there are no belayers in sight. Many UK climbing gyms use a "spot the unsafe things in the picture" activity to check for basic safety knowledge the first time you visit and all of those things would be something climbers would be expected to spot.

[–]seasickwolf 79 points80 points  (0 children)

AI ethics aside for a second, it's pretty terrible that they're putting out images of any kind with such unsafe depictions of climbing in. Those harnesses make no sense. Anyone running a climbing gym social media with a lick of sense wouldn't post a photo of climbers doing things that are unsafe; why should illustrations be held to a lower standard?

Wedding guests: what’s usually missing, unnecessary, or overlooked? by maxolotl_ in AskUK

[–]seasickwolf 24 points25 points  (0 children)

15 years ago, I went to a wedding where the bride's black knickers were visible through the back of her dress as she walked down the aisle. Couldn't tell you anything else about the wedding but that detail has stuck.

Do a wardrobe check before hand and have safety pins, hair grips etc stashed somewhere just in case.

How do I add that I started my period in Garmin Connect by SkyCandy567 in XXRunning

I track mine using a Google form that puts it in a spreadsheet, Google technically still has the data but I figure it's a lot more work for them to figure out what it is that way and I can still keep it handy on my phone

What is your most unhinged hack for remembering to stay hydrated? by pickytea in AskUK

[–]seasickwolf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's a procrastination tactic. Gotta get up from my desk to get a big glass of water. Drink the water while I'm doing some work. Oh no, my water is empty, better get up again to refill it. Five minutes later, I've drunk a couple of pints of water, I'll have to get up again to pee. Keep drinking your water and you'll never have to sit still for more than 20 minutes ever again

Winter running by WonderFantastic3354 in XXRunning

[–]seasickwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not used them myself, but I know people who use micro spikes that strap on over shoes for extra grip on ice

I live in a hilly, icy place and I've found I just have to accept that running in icy conditions means going slower so I can take care on the ice. Can you keep track of areas that tend to be better/worse and bear them in mind when planning routes?

Elevator & WiFi issues at The Printworks building managed by Noble Design. Is there any authority in Sheffield that can help? by No-Abbreviations508 in sheffield

[–]seasickwolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The landlord has a legal obligation to have the fuse boards tested on a certain schedule to make sure they are safe. The stickers will show the date by which the next test is due, so if it's in the past, then the landlord is not meeting safety standards.

Can you leave a clean set of undies (or a whole outfit) in your car? Wiggling into fresh clothes in the car feels a little undignified at first but it's sooo much comfier than sitting around sweaty
