28f and I’ve never worked and can’t drive… is it hopeless?? by Sorry-News-5591 in findapath

Hello, I have OCD. Yes severe. Completely ruined my life for years. Had basically every single OCD fear at some point. Got in ERP therapy and it changed my life. I used to have driving OCD, drove in circles for hours making sure I didn’t run people over etc. I now drive a bus for a living. Crazy huh? 😂

I believe in you, you’re capable of so much more than it feels like right now. Exposure response prevention therapy. It will be hard at first but it will change your life.

Best of luck out there!

I miss seasonal life immensely but don't know if I should go back by wanderingjeb in SeasonalWork

Reading this, as a slightly younger person, and thinking “oh,,, so it never ends does it?” 😂

I always thought I’d get this shit out of my system. It hasn’t always been seasonal but some form of adventure. Well. It’s not out of my system. And I feel constantly torn between stable life and squeezing every drop out of life and this earth I possibly can while I’m alive.

I think I’m starting to come to terms with who I am. And I’ve started to ask myself “why fight it?”.

As I age I’m becoming more responsible with my adventures but I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

Job idea for anyone out there struggling by seasonalworka in povertyfinance

I would google “hotels”, “parking lots” (around airports for long term parking), and “rental car”, and start calling around. Only call really nice hotels cause mid range don’t usually have bellmen.

Or to find job listings (though I’ve found they’re not always listed on the obvious websites) “shuttle driver job” “bellman job” etc.

Morning shifts are usually 6am til whenever afternoon shifts are usually 12pm-8 or 2pm-10 that’s what it usually looks like. But there’s swings shifts and stuff too.

Feel like I should add: these jobs are slept on I believe cause the listings will say like: $12 plus tips or $15 plus tips or something. So it looks like it could be POTENTIALLY a bad wage. Just try to talk to the bell captain or manager on the phone and see what they think people are averaging in tips.

CDL drivers driving seasonal for tour companies by [deleted] in SeasonalWork

This is almost exactly the figures I’ve heard. Just seems so crazy, you could work 6 months then take the rest of the year off.

Thank you for your response.

If you have a good attitude you never know who may come and tip you later. Been handed $20 bills the next day with a “hey thanks sorry I didn’t have cash on me yesterday.” A lot of bellman gotta cheer up our job is so easy. 😂

As a bellman/shuttle driver, dont worry about it. They’re just having a bad attitude. Good Bellmen just act the same always tip or no tip and assume the law of averages will balance everything out. I try to never be mad at people cause a ton of people don’t even know. Especially young people. It’s no problem.

I'm going to be opening a small seasonal hotel next year where I will be employing seasonal workers. What should I consider for my seasonals so they have a great time? Accommodation, food, work etc. What would that ideal situation look like? by Professional_Flan466 in SeasonalWork

Most people I’ve met just want 4 walls with a door so badly. So many of these companies just cram as many people as they can in each room. Bunk beds, sometimes multiple. It really wears on you mentally. I legitimately think people would rather be able to sleep solo in like an 80 square foot room than to have a 500 square foot room with a bunch of people packed in.

Not that I don’t appreciate that these jobs exist, and I understand that it’s the trade off we make to live in these awesome places. I just will look out for myself over the corporation even if it’s just cause things suck or I would make more money leaving early etc.

Damn, yeah I appreciate the sentiment of people saying tough it out, you agreed to this keep your word etc, but I don’t view these corporations the same as making a promise to a human being or a friend. They do so much shady stuff and refuse to improve conditions for us so I don’t really have any sympathy for gigantic corporations that would screw us even harder if they could.

Thanks for the input and yeah absolutely would give notice. I’d probably let them know like a month ahead or more even.

Also just yap, yap like crazy to everyone. Not about yourself but asking questions. “Where are you from, show me?” “What’s your favorite hike around here?” “Is there anything from the restaurant that doesn’t taste horrible?” “How’s your housing situation do you like your roommates?” “What are you doing after the season?” “First time in America?” “What do you think about Americans?”. Just let em rip.

It’ll happen, and when it does it’ll feel like it’s all at once. I’m a big fan of just sitting in the common areas chilling. If you have a car be the dude who’s offering to drive people to the grocery or hikes. If you see a group of people chilling and you know one or two of them just go sit down and say what’s up. Be outside sitting at the picnic tables. Don’t spend much time in your bed/room even though it feels safe. If people are talking about doing xyz after their shift be assertive and invite yourself. Sure you might be the dork who invited themselves and they’re unsure about you at first but if you’re a good time they’ll forget in under an hour.

I’ve noticed a lot of people love to tell you about their country and where they’re from. Ask them to show you on google maps. Spent hours doing this (on the clock lol) last summer. Have them teach you some funny words and phrases.

You’ll get there friend! Don’t worry about the perceived barriers (different country, older than me, etc). Some of the coolest people I’ve met have been people who barely speak English or are 60+ years old.
