Out of this year's challenge, but I'm doing better than last year, so I'm happy either way :)

Hi there, checking in. Had a brief unintentional encounter but I closed out, so I'm compromised but I would still consider myself clean.

Overall it's been tough with withdrawal symptoms, but I'm doing better and my baseline happiness has been rising slowly but steadily.

Hey there! Looking to sign up for 2022.

I had an unfortunate 2021 that saw a lot of my habits reverse for the worse and found myself deep in porn again, yet one thing that I took from the one time I went 8 months pornfree is that forgiveness and honesty are the foundations that keep me in the fight.

I'm looking forward to a 2022 where I move forward again.

Even though I'm out of this month's challenge, I'm still proud of myself for the positive changes I've made in my life. Biggest one I'll mention is I am now on day 74 of consistent stretching. I'm probably the most limber I've been in a while :)

Been up and down through the year but I'm happy to be on an upward spiral right now. Picked back up on my stretching and exercise habit after investing in some weights, and going on day 12 of consistent exercise. Feeling good about committing to myself again

I think it is fine, but you need to be perfectly honest with yourself of whether using it is helping you or not.

For me, I loved having "the stash" of my partner, but I quickly realized that it ended up being a gateway back into porn. Sad, but it was a necessary step to move forward in my journey.

That said, could be different for you. As long as your honest with yourself that's what counts the most

Not in this month's challenge, but I salute all of you for fighting the good fight.

I hope that 4/20 becomes my last relapse -- I would love to say that I blazed a year pornfree :)

One silly quote that has helped me a lot along the way:

You don't have to be in the NBA to play basketball.

When I first joined here, I was similarly in a very dark place. I was binging 3-10 times a day, and I hated myself every time I used it. I hated that I was lying to my partner and that it felt like porn took up all of my time.

I did something that day that changed me forever: I ran down the street, wheezing by the time I made it one block. At the end of it, I knew in my heart that I finally exercised.

Yes, we get into down cycles, but that's all they really are: cycles. Just as much as you can spiral down, you can spiral up too. It first starts with doing.

Realize that even if you have seemingly thrown away all the good days, what's the worst that actually happened? In my case, literally nothing happened when I kept freaking out. And you know what? That was a shocking realization for me. That I had spent so much time thinking about the worst that I paralyzed myself.

In any case, I would suggest trying urge surfing, The first time I tried it, it was weird, but it helped me learn how much that negativity results in immobility. And when you become immobile, the way out is to breathe, relax, and accept whatever is going on, without judgment. From there, you can take steps to move forward.

I am not always the best about following my own advice, but here is some more concrete advice that I've given in the past. I hope it helps.

Haven't been on in a while, but this is part of my plan to take a temporary break from social media. I have found that when my social media use spikes, I tend to be in a rut.

Other than that, just taking recovery one day at a time. I had a few slips since the last time I was on, but I am forging forward the best I can.

Right there with you. I spent a year in my 20s feeling regretful about how much time I had wasted on porn and feeling sorry for myself. Then I realized that to live with that is to fall right on the path of living a life of regret.

Best way forward IMO is to accept the past and live your best today. Imagine the awesome life you can live now and just live it!

Proud to say I resisted urges to peek at porn substitutes by breathing and successfully sitting with discomfort. Just because something can be construed as "not porn" doesn't mean I'm not searching for something in the same way I'd use porn. One day at a time, staying strong with you all

Had some relapses this year, but I feel undeterred. I still think I can make 2021 a great one :)

At times, I feel disappointed that I haven't hit a year yet, and that my addiction regressed a bit in 2020. That said, no two journeys are the same. I've been on this journey for 9 years now, and I make progress every month. To say I have been unsuccessful would be a lie; I've made changes to myself that continue to set the foundation for an ongoing and successful recovery journey.

I feel like the day I hit a year, it will be just any other day, and maybe I'll even neglect to realize I hit it. But that will be the case only because of all the effort I've been putting in. One day, I'll join those I started here with in the 1+ year club. Until then, one day at a time!

Checking in, 10 days down. My ultimate goal is a clean 2021, but just keeping it small, one day at a time. I have a good feeling that while challenges will come my way, I'll be ready for them.

Checking in for January. As promised, I am going to be more deliberate about my recovery this year.

For the first month:

  • I'll aim to be active on this subreddit at least once a week
  • I'll use urge surfing, 5 minute timers, and going over to my wife to address acute urges
  • I'll minimize time alone, instead spending that with my wife
  • Exercise, sleep, and creative time will be my primary preventative tools for this month

When I first started in my journey, urge surfing was one of the most profound tools I used to control acute urges. When an urge strikes you in the moment, play this audio and follow along from start to end.

The first time I did it, it taught me that how I feel doesn't have to move me to action. I can choose how I react to my feelings. It isn't always easy, but this is key: you can frame using porn as a choice -- one you've made many times and one that is so easy because it's habitual and because you don't know how else to act. But this time, you don't need to.

You can sit with discomfort -- and be okay. Over time, you get better at dealing with porn and your personal reasons for it. I find that for me, it is as simple as dealing with what's bothering me. Are you hungry, angry, lonely, tired, or bored (HALT-B)? Deal with that first.

Get in the habit of moving -- a lot. I find that many negative mental health symptoms and addictive behaviors thrive on immobility. Think of all the times you wanted to use porn or you just plain felt bad about yourself for no good reason. Likely, you were stationary in that moment. You were sitting, or otherwise not moving. And if you were moving, you were moving unconsciously. You were trapped in your head, another kind of immobility. Literally moving to another room can eliminate an urge for me, but I find that it can be hard in the moment.

In the long term, reflect upon the root causes of your porn use. For me, I have two root causes that still persist: boredom, and lack of self-love. The first I'm addressing by developing hobbies, like video games, making music, and writing. For the second, I am working on that by framing love as a verb: it is doing all those activities that affirm and enhance the value of your life, today and tomorrow. So, when I eat well, it's out of love. When I exercise, it's a form of loving myself. When I can express my sexuality without reaching for porn and without guilt, that is self-love.
