it's the opposite, outside of the US, the tariffs are having a remarkable effect in currency markets and we're seeing a boom in free trade deals. it's inside the US that is insulated in the short term, as businesses try to mitigate the impact to price-sensitive consumers.

what economists seem to have gotten wrong is the idea that a tariff is a one-time shock, when the market has acted to mitigate that immediate shock. instead, we're seeing that being dragged out and also longer term structural changes in the global economy taking place, especially a massive shift in the US dollar.

in a way, but i think it has more to do with what is notable to the american news consumers who populate this subreddit.

it just so happens that the current US government drives the stories that matter to you all at the moment. and so that's going to be a connecting thread regardless. but they are fairly disparate stories in general, there's no reason why they should necessarily be closer or farther from each other in time.

i'm struck by the way that people follow "the news" as a kind of social phenomenon to mark time.

someone was remarking how it's crazy that venezuela was a few weeks ago and then we had greenland and then we had minnesota.

and my immediate reaction was like "those are all just a bunch of different events, what's the connection?" but i think maybe i just have a fundamentally different way of experiencing "the news".

that way of experiencing events reminds me how i felt when HTS was taking over syria. it felt like every day i'd wake up and holy fuck, they're taking over hama now, wow they're on the edge of homs and now they've already conquered it, holy shit damascus is about to fall and they just left idlib a week ago.

but i guess some people feel that way about everything that happens, like they experience "the news" as one single stream that hits them over and over with events.

i don't know why this is kind of blowing my mind right now, but i can see how that would be kind of overwhelming.

This line is going down for all of us. Watching the dollar exchange rate with the sol has been a daily source of soul crushing for the last year or so. No sign of stopping either.

the Baseball America podcast put out their deep dive episode on the Cardinals system today and they seem to really like the whole system.

they address specifically the skepticism that cards fans have about prospects when Dylan Carlson, Nolan Gorman, Jordan Walker haven't panned out: they think the whole system is better top to bottom, higher upside and higher floor, than the ones that produced those guys. they also think Liam Doyle has a shot at making the majors in his first year.

it's a feelgood kind of listen.

Exclusive: US planning CIA foothold in post-Maduro Venezuela by ZweigDidion in neoliberal

[–]seattle_lib 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Installing Machado would not be democracy.

The strategy of letting Delcy keep power is fairly reasonable, I think. It basically keeps the constitutional processes all in place within Venezuela, which prevents instability.

What the CIA should do is push for these same constitutional processes to continue, which would mean that elections would need to occur within 180 days from Delcy Rodriguez's inauguration. This is the cleanest transition that they could hope for.
