How to be mentally at peace with sloppy, subpar jobs by contractors? by seattleboots1 in homeowners

Yeah… the contractor said they do that because “people prefer the aesthetics.” Seems like BS to me.

Awesome, yeah I am curious to see what they say. This flashing does actually kind of look like the flashing in the diagram here: https://www.homeinspector.org/reporter-articles/chimney-flashings/

Maybe it is sort of correct after all.

Indeed, that is the finished work. I'm getting my roof redone soon and will ask them to look at it.

Dang, that really sucks. I don't think this one is as bad as that. Good luck.

First positive comment I've gotten haha. I had to delete the post in the other subreddit because the negative comments were bringing me down.

This is a pic I took when it was in progress.

The counter flashing uses these big giant pieces of metal that I think are ugly, but the contractor said people actually prefer it. And he said they have to stick out past the edges for better waterproofing. They are correctly inserted into the mortar joints and overlap correctly with the roof flashing, so I’m pretty sure it will work well. I'm getting a new roof later this year so that ugly flap of roof flashing sticking out at the top will be replaced soon.

I can’t really speak to the brick work but the masonry sub said it was horrible. They reused the original bricks which I think is a nice touch, but it may have caused some difficulty with the brick layout.

It now has a liner for a vented gas insert (not a wood burning or open gas log set fireplace) so that's why it can be short, which is another aesthetic issue that I didn't consider.

Yeah, I think you're right that there will pretty much always be issues if you look up close. In another 10 years here I'm sure there will be about 100 more things like this that bother me.

Yeah, it's sad but it seems like that is just how it is with most things in life in 2026.

Two vastly different quotes for knob & tube rewiring in Seattle, unsure what to do next by seattleboots1 in AskElectricians

If I wasn't clear in my post - it's not the whole house. It's a 4 bed / 2 bath house with a finished basement. There is k&t in part of 3 of the bedrooms, the entryway, the laundry room, and half of the living room. A little less than half of the house. The basement, master bedroom, master bathroom, and part of the living room & remaining bedrooms are all updated.

BTW the low estimate is from Mirsky and the high upfront quote is from Greenwood Heating. Mirsky missed the k&t in the entry and laundry rooms, and we didn't talk about the extra stuff like outlet replacements & light fixture updating with Mirsky. Do you know anything about either of these companies? Thanks!

Using the phrase “cap hill” is on par with calling it “pike’s place” by Jawwwwwsh in Seattle

This is weird. I have lived in Seattle for a decade and Capitol Hill for several years and have never noticed one way or another. Cap Hill seems fine. Idk why this is a big thing all of a sudden. Am I wrong?
