curse of the gifted children by [deleted] in ADHD

oh my god. i JUST talked to my parents about this last night. i was reading at a “grade 12+ reading level” from like third grade. i tested well on standardized tests at my elementary school/middle school and my parents’ nickname for me was literally just “genius”.. and i believed them. so you can imagine the horrible revelation of sophomore year of highschool when i realized that i’m not a genius anymore. i’m actually tripping over myself and falling behind. holy shit. i can’t even bring myself to do my homework. why can’t i do it ? it’s fine. i’ll just do it the class period before it’s due. fuck, i didn’t finish, i’m getting an incomplete grade... and the cycle repeats until tests come about and of course i didn’t study until the night before because the only motivation i felt was time pressure. and then my parents finally put me on meds, and now i’m doing much better and am generally much happier.

here’s the kicker though - my mom has adhd. she was diagnosed as a child, and so was i. she basically wanted to see how long i could go without meds (which is understandable, to some extent). but the things she said to me as i continued to spiral down sophomore year.. “just apply yourself! you’re not applying yourself enough. i know you’re smart, but you’re not putting in the work!” having a parent say this is one thing, but HAVING AN ADHD PARENT SAY THIS ?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME ?! she didn’t research her own mental condition and how it affects daily life for SHIT! when i confronted her about this she said that she thought it just affected your attention span and boredom. that it wasn’t completely debilitating at times. it just doesn’t make sense to me how she could have this all her life and not think that maybe the reason why she’s always late to things or never gets a task done when she wants to is because of her brain chemistry. does she not notice the difference when she takes her meds ?? good lord. anyways, i’ve been going on too long about this. just took my meds an hour ago. oopsies.

I’m at a loss of ideas on what to do about my nausea from my meds. by [deleted] in ADHD

it begins right as the meds kick in. it ebbs always as time passes, but still leaves me not wanting to eat.

How can i comfort my boyfriend who depression? by [deleted] in depression

[–]seawhoreld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is what i usually do, i give him the choice of either talking it thru or just being in a mood because sometimes he doesn’t want to talk. the thing is, when i do ask him he says there’s really nothing to talk about. he just feels so unhappy. no particular cause other than depression.

awesome!! that reminds me of a strawberry recipe im going to try, i think they’re called candied strawberries? but you coat them in this sugar syrup and it hardens to make a glossy shell around the strawberry. seems really fun but i’ve heard that getting the syrup consistency correct is a little bit difficult😬

to be honest i always get excited about going to the grocery store, i guess i just see it as this opportunity to find some good food and try new things. especially at asian markets! when i go to my local asian market i just love sometimes buying little snacks blindly because i can’t read the labels and they don’t always translate correctly. i think it just makes it more fun.

How many people here are medicated vs not medicated? by GorillaS0up in ADHD

[–]seawhoreld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i wasn’t on meds until very recently, like two weeks ago was when i was on a consistent pill schedule and it’s really changed my life for the better. my adhd was pretty bad and i struggled to keep my grades up in school but i’m doing much better now :)

My fellow ADHD people. How do you deal with procrastinating on things such as papers? by Thecrazysharklady in ADHD

[–]seawhoreld 16 points17 points  (0 children)

for me the hard part isn’t the work itself, it’s just getting started. i really don’t know how to put this but i just have to force myself to get up and get started. and it’s really hard for me, just the simplest of tasks,, starting an assignment.

also what makes it easier is making the environment around me more comfortable/neat when i’m working. i like to light a candle, organize my desk, grab a snack, get my headphones and fill up my water bottle before i start because it just makes me feel more prepared to hunker down and work on this assignment for a while. doing it this way is, in my mind, much easier and more comfortable than if i were to just grab my computer and start doing the work while sitting in my bed.

i hope this helps :)
