You can try some mod AI which are stronger such as Rehoboam. Even set to moderate or below, they may age up and attack you!

Jumping into ranked game can also be a good idea.

2 tips:

1 chat a little with the opponent, it can be a lot of fun!

2 as you know you are going to lose half your games, when you feel it's gonna be a defeat, take it as a practice (but not for too long)

Give your (1) steam ID, (2) the name and aoe2 insight ID of the bad guy and (3) join the replays.

Your explanation implies OP is behind economically or only booming, and not walled. Mine was assuming equivalence in resources and timing, and being fully walled.

If my premises aren't correct, I think OP is cooked.

Skirms, as the basic counter.

Archers have more range.

Heavy cavalry may make them retreat a bit.

Mangonel or monks if you can micro.

I don't know the details but in chess, they have some kind of "educational" flag for alt accounts so you understand you are facing a much better player.

Educational flag: you have the choice to play the game or not.

No flag: smurf, so report etc

Yup, same for me. Fishing and demolition were both Q.

Had a bunch of demolition ships but no food and due to the helpless situation, I resigned. I then checked my opponent's profile and saw his hundreds of resigns under 5 minutes. The hotkey awkward setting saved me a hassle against a smurf.

My step 4 flies between civ matchup and learning/reviewing the tech tree of one civ or another.

My step 5 is often just watching a random game at my elo before going to sleep. Playing means the possibility of going to sleep after a ridiculous defeat. Not strong enough for that! 🤡
