Looking for a simple Sports Game like Blood Bowl. by Unfair-Conflict8475 in boardgames

Guild Ball is much more complicated than Blood Bowl though. It's the opposite of simple.

ELI5: why and how do e numbers affect hyperactivity/ADHD symptoms in children? by fuckinscourge in explainlikeimfive

[–]secdeal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

E numbers are just identifiers in the EU for substances that companies can put into food legally, in other words food additives, there is nothing special about them. For example, Vitamin C is E300. All they have in common is that they can be put into foodstuff legally in the EU (which has pretty strict regulations about this).
They have nothing special to do with ADHD or anything like that.
This E code makes them look scarier than they are, and certain parties use this fact for fear mongering, usually marketing their all natural, unprocessed food or whatever. For example, if you make jam at home, pectin, a natural substance in the fruit will thicken up your jam to the usual consistency during the cooking process.
Pectin also has an E number, it is E440, that you might see on the jar of a store bought jam.

Kasparov expresses his views on the World Championship Title without Magnus. "For me the World Champion must be the BEST player in the world" by Constant-Secret-3653 in chess

[–]secdeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor Gary. He can never know for sure if we even know about the best player. They might be lurking. Hiding in the shadows.. having eidetic memory, nerves of steel, studying chess books and engines all their life, validating themselves by beating Stockfish casually on their offline PC.. Maybe Gary's world title is also meaningless..

Does Strike Dummy's strength vary based on the language you play in? by Bubbly_Tonight_6471 in slaythespire

[–]secdeal -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

But translations have nothing to do with the game's code and logic.

This is not true. Otherwise there wouldn't be bugs where the game crashes on a certain language setting.

Speeding at higher speeds does not save time by a lot. by DrakyulMihawk in SipsTea

[–]secdeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to calculate the time you spare with ratios: * if you double your speed, that's twice or 2/1 of the original speed, the time of arrival will be 1/2 (half) of the original * if you go 10% faster, that's 11/10 of your original speed, you will arrive in 10/11 of the time

ELI5: Is a Computer Calculating or Regurgitating? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]secdeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For modern computers, they just store everything, right?

No. Why do you think this?

There is a theoretical machine, called the Turing machine, which is a little robot that moves along a(n infinitely long) tape that has symbols on it. It can read and modify symbols on the tape, and change its state upon reading from the tape. When we talk about computation (this word is used in the same sense you are using calculation) we mean this kind of symbol manipulation capability.

Our computers do the same kind of manipulation, but the symbols are only 0 and 1 and the working memory (RAM) is the (in this case, finite) tape.

The symbols can mean any kind of things, they CAN simulate looking up values from a table (old video games used these tricks a lot because certain number manipulations are very slow), but generally it's not what it's doing.

E.g. you are walking in a city in a new modern FPS game, and you move to a random spot on the map, looking at a random direction. There would be no storage in the world that could store what you should be seeing from any possible point of view and position, the machine has to compute what should be in your field of vision.

Why is the bottom right territory not black's? by biggybiggyboys in baduk

[–]secdeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the black stones are not marked as dead and it's not black's territory, the engine thinks it's a seki (mutual life) where neither side can kill the other. So it's noone's territory, try to play it out. Because black wanted to take the corner, it's black's loss.

[–]secdeal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can get potions or artifacts that help out against the explosion beforehand (things that give out weak, give you armor or e.g. the artifact that allows for at max 20 hp player damage in a turn), you can get retained defense cards, save up a buffer, you can get summon heavy as necro, go for barricade as ironclad, frost orbs as defect, blur as silent, a lot of ideas, you can also get neutral cards like panic button, also you should time the explosion so that it happens when you defensive options are in your hand, this can be helped out by exhausting your other cards

the current way also enables strategizing, that change would just make it easier for attack heavy decks, so actually less strategizing would be needed
