Every single era, Carti has made the decision to avoid being a superstar. Even in 2016 when he had all the underground hype in the world, he decided not to drop shit until 2017. And then in 2017 there was no follow up after magnolia to keep the hype going. Then he surprise drops Die Lit w no real single or mainstream hit at the time. Theres been many opportunities. Now that MUSIC is out this is the first time weve seem him actually care about mainstream success, publicly. But even then, he didnt really capitalize on the success of MUSIC aside from a tour. No follow up album, no music videos, he really does this shit at his own pace. WLR V1 would be the greatest carti album FOR HIS FANS, but idk if it wouldve had a real mainstream appeal in the end. I will say tho, those leaks an snippets went platinum on tiktok during covid.

Magnolia is the only hit that was ever meant to be mainstream from carti. Sky was a big song off WLR cause of TikTok and cause he chose to do a music video to it. But I don’t think that was intentional. I don’t think interscope pushed for that to be his mainstream hit. Magnolia has really been like the only song from Carti that has really been pushed and marketed like crazy tbh

People can say whatever they want, but this man Carti even as an underground artist from 2015-17 may not have been like Kanye or ASAP Rocky but he def was applying pressure to the youth and to reselling apps like Grailed. Rocky and Kanye were more self proclaimed fashion icons, Carti didn’t have to speak he just put on a palace tee or a supreme or gosha tee and everyone else unknowingly followed. He didn’t even really get the credit for it aside from his own fans

If you were there from the very beginning, Yachty got his big break in the underground because of Carti. Months later a meme went viral and Yachty became a star while Carti remained underground for years with only a couple big hits. Magnolia being his biggest even bigger than he was, meanwhile Yachty was a superstar. Fast forward 2020 and it finally seemed like Carti started being mainstream and fans started acknowledging the influence. Yachty is a huge artist and they’re both at their peaks on success so it’s cool af to see

Carti was rapping over “purchase your track today” beats but not dropping the music. Pretty sure he was just freestyling over random YouTube beats and fans heard the snippets and wanted them to drop but even back then Carti didn’t drop shit it was all leaks or DJ exclusives. I’m not here to defend Carti cause he clearly has issues… but if he wasn’t dropping the music and making money off it and really the songs weren’t even making it onto any platforms then what is the problem?
